Abstract
The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of trazodone. In particular, the present invention relates to a continuous process for the preparation of trazodone. More in particular, the present invention relates to a new method for the preparation of trazodone, said method comprising at least one step consisting of a continuous process performed in a flow reactor.

A continuous process for the preparation of trazodone base (IV), comprising reacting N-(3-chlorophenyl)-N′-(3-chloropropyl)-piperazine (II) and s-triazolo-[4,3-a]-pyridin-3-one (III), according to reaction scheme 2:
- comprising continuously mixing in a flow reactor an alkaline aqueous solution of s-triazolo-[4,3-a]-pyridin-3-one (III) and an organic solution of N-(3-chlorophenyl)-N′-(3-chloropropyl)-piperazine (II), and continuously recovering trazodone base (IV).
