Systems and methods for pump-assisted blood circulation

An apparatus for pumping blood, the apparatus comprising:

• a pump including an impeller, the pump including an outer wall including at least two different size outer perimeters along an axial direction of the pump;
• a stator configured to impart a rotational motion to the impeller by applying a magnetic field to the impeller, the stator including:
• a clamshell design to move the stator between (1) an open position to insert or remove the pump, and (ii) a closed position with the stator positioned circumferentially about the pump to impart the rotational motion to the impeller, and
• an inner wall including at least two different size inner perimeters along an axial direction of the stator, wherein the at least two different size inner perimeters of the inner wall of the stator correspond to the at least two different size outer perimeters of the outer wall of the pump;
• and
• one or more controllers configured to detect, using one or more sensors, whether the stator is in the open position or the closed position.
