Abstract
A method for power transmission method includes providing first and second shafts, first and second gear assemblies between the first and second shafts, and first and second coupling assemblies. The first coupling assembly coupling the first shaft to the first gear assembly, and the second coupling assembly coupling the first shaft to the second gear assembly. The speed of the first shaft varies, wherein the deployment of a locking element of the second coupling assembly is based on the speed of the first shaft.

A power transmission method comprising:
- providing a first shaft, the first shaft rotatable at a variable rotation speed;
- providing a second shaft, the second shaft rotatable at a variable rotation speed;
- providing a first gear assembly between the first shaft and the second shaft, the first gear assembly including a gear rotatably mounted to the first shaft;
- providing a second gear assembly between the first shaft and the second shaft, the second gear assembly including a gear rotatably mounted to the first shaft;
- providing a first coupling assembly selectively coupling the gear of the first gear assembly to the first shaft, the first coupling assembly including a notch plate, a pocket plate, and a locking element in a deployed position;
- providing a second coupling assembly selectively coupling the gear of the second gear assembly to the first shaft, the second coupling assembly including a notch plate, a pocket plate, and a locking element movable between a deployed and nondeployed position;
- and
- varying the speed of the first shaft, wherein deployment of the locking element of the second coupling assembly is based on the speed of the first shaft.
A power transmission method comprising:
- providing an input member, the input member rotatable at a variable rotation speed;
- providing an output member, the output member rotatable at a variable rotation speed;
- providing a first gear assembly between the input member and the output member, the first gear assembly providing a first power path;
- providing a second gear assembly between the input member and the output member the second gear assembly providing a second power path;
- providing a first one-way clutch including a forward torque transmitting locking element, positioning the first one-way clutch between the first gear assembly and the input member;
- providing a second one-way clutch including a forward torque transmitting locking element, positioning the second one-way clutch between the second gear assembly and the input member;
- deploying the forward torque transmitting locking element of the first one-way clutch and transmitting power from the input member through the first gear assembly to the output member through the first power path;
- reducing the speed of the input member until the speed of the input member is below the speed of the second gear assembly;
- deploying the forward torque transmitting locking element of the second one-way clutch after the speed of the input member is below the speed of the second gear assembly;
- and
- transmitting power from the input member through the second gear assembly to the output member in the second power path.
A power transmission method comprising:
- providing an input member, the input member rotatable at a variable rotation speed;
- providing an output member, the output member rotatable at a variable rotation speed;
- providing a first gear assembly between the input member and the output member, the first gear assembly providing a first power path;
- providing a second gear assembly between the input member and the output member the second gear assembly providing a second power path;
- providing a first one-way clutch including a forward torque transmitting locking element, positioning the first one-way clutch between the first gear assembly and the input member;
- providing a second one-way clutch including a forward torque transmitting locking element, positioning the second one-way clutch between the second gear assembly and the input member;
- initially transmitting power from the input member through the second gear assembly to the output member through the second power path;
- placing the forward torque transmitting locking element of the first one-way clutch in a deployed position and the forward torque transmitting locking element of the second one-way clutch in a nondeployed position;
- after the forward torque transmitting locking element of the second one-way clutch is in a nondeployed position, increasing the speed of the input member to passively connect the forward torque transmitting locking element of the first one-way clutch and the first gear assembly;
- and
- transmitting power from the input member through the first gear assembly to the output member through the first power path.
