Abstract
A fishing rod assembly includes a rod and a reel assembly. The reel assembly includes a housing, a spool positioned within the housing and configured to (a) rotate about an axis to retrieve or let out a fishing line and (b) translate along the axis to adjust a drag, wherein the spool comprises an inner volume, a spindle disposed within the inner volume of the spool and having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the spindle is engaged with the spool, a drive configured to receive an input torque from a user and provide an output torque to the spool, and a lever. The lever assembly configured to receive a user input and translate the spool along the axis towards a second end of the reel to adjust the drag.
Claims19
A fishing rod assembly, comprising:
- a rod;
- and
- a reel assembly, comprising:
- a housing;
- a spool positioned within the housing and configured to (a) rotate about an axis to retrieve or let out a fishing line and (b) translate along the axis to adjust a drag, wherein the spool comprises an inner volume;
- a spindle disposed within the inner volume of the spool and having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the spindle is engaged with the spool;
- a drive configured to receive an input torque from a user and provide an output torque to the spool, the drive comprising a gear set configured to drive the spool to rotate about the central axis, the gear set comprising a first set of gears and a second set of gears;
- and
- a lever assembly configured to receive a user input and translate the spool along the axis towards a second end of the reel to adjust the drag;
- wherein the gear set is configured to receive input rotational kinetic energy from a handle through the second set of gears and output rotational kinetic energy to the spool through the first set of gears, wherein the first set of gears comprises a planetary gear set arranged about the central axis, and wherein the second set of gears is arranged about an offset axis that is spaced from the central axis about which the handle is configured to be driven;
- and
- wherein the lever assembly and the central axis are rearward of the offset axis, more proximate a grip of the rod than the offset axis.
A fishing reel comprising:
- a first housing member, a second housing member, and one or more support members, the first housing member and second housing member positioned apart from each other and the one or more support members extending between the first housing member and the second housing member;
- a spool positioned between and at least partially within the first housing member and the second housing member, the spool configured to rotate about a central axis to retrieve a fishing line and translate along the central axis to adjust a drag, the spool comprising an inner volume through which a spindle extends, the spindle configured to engage the spool at a first end and extend along the central axis;
- a drive configured to receive an input torque from a user and provide an output torque to the spool, the drive comprising a gear set configured to drive the spool to rotate about the central axis, the gear set comprising a first set of one or more gears arranged about the central axis, and a second set of one or more gears arranged about an axis offset from the central axis;
- and
- a lever assembly comprising a cam and an adjustment member, the lever assembly configured to receive a user input and translate the spool along the central axis towards a second end of the fishing reel to adjust the drag;
- wherein the gear set is configured to receive input rotational kinetic energy from a handle through the first set of one or more gears and output rotational kinetic energy to the spool through the second set of one or more gears, the handle configured to be driven about the axis offset from the central axis;
- and
- wherein the lever assembly and the central axis are further rearward from a side of the fishing reel that receives the fishing line than the axis offset from the central axis.
A fishing reel comprising:
- a housing defining a first end and a second end of the fishing reel;
- a spool positioned at least partially within the housing, the spool configured to rotate about a first axis to retrieve a fishing line and translate along the first axis to adjust a drag, the spool comprising:
- a brake pad fixedly coupled with the spool;
- and
- a drag plate configured to engage the brake pad through a frictional engagement;
- wherein the brake pad is configured to exert a compressive force on the drag plate when the spool translates along the first axis towards the second end of the fishing reel;
- a drive configured to receive an input torque from a user and provide an output torque to the spool when the drag plate frictionally engages the brake pad, the drive comprising a first set of one or more gears arranged about the first axis, and a second set of one or more gears arranged about a second axis offset from the first axis, the drag plate fixedly coupled with an output of the second set of one or more gears;
- and
- a lever assembly positioned at the second end of the fishing reel and configured to receive a user input, rotate about the first axis, and translate the spool along the first axis to increase or decrease the compressive force exerted on the drag plate by the brake pad to adjust the drag;
- wherein the second set of one or more gears are configured to receive an input torque from a handle that is configured to be driven about the second axis to drive the spool about the first axis;
- and
- wherein the second axis is more proximate a side of the fishing reel that receives the fishing line onto the spool than the first axis.
