Abstract
A biodegradable microwave susceptor and constructs incorporating the susceptor are disclosed for heating a food item in a microwave oven. The biodegradable microwave susceptor includes a patterned susceptor layer of metal on a biodegradable substrate. Selected areas of the susceptor layer may be demetallized to remove susceptor material. The susceptor may be incorporated into a construct for containing or supporting a food item to be heated.
Claims41
A construct for heating a food item in a microwave oven, comprising:
- a bottom panel having an inner surface and an outer surface;
- a first side panel extending upwardly from the bottom panel;
- a second side panel extending upwardly from the bottom panel;
- wherein the bottom panel, the first side panel and the second side panel form a U-shaped structure defining an interior space for receiving the food item and wherein at least one fold area is present between the bottom panel and the first side panel or the second side panel;
- and
- a microwave susceptor attached to the inner surface of the bottom panel comprising:
- a susceptor layer, wherein the susceptor layer comprises at least one area of microwave interactive material and at least one area devoid of microwave interactive material, wherein the least one area devoid of microwave interactive material corresponds to the at least one fold area;
- and
- a biodegradable substrate attached to the susceptor layer comprised of a biodegradable thin film, wherein the biodegradable thin film covers the susceptor layer including the at least one area of microwave interactive material and the at least one area devoid of microwave interactive material.
A construct for heating a food item in a microwave oven, comprising:
- a plurality of panels arranged to define a space for the food item, wherein at least one panel of the plurality of panels has a surface exposed at least partially to the space, wherein the surface includes a microwave susceptor;
- and
- a fold area between a first panel and a second panel of the plurality of panels;
- wherein the microwave susceptor comprises:
- a susceptor layer, wherein the susceptor layer comprises at least one area of microwave interactive material and at least one area devoid of microwave interactive material, wherein the at least one area devoid of microwave interactive material corresponds to the fold area;
- and
- a biodegradable substrate attached to the susceptor layer comprised of a biodegradable thin film, wherein the biodegradable thin film covers the susceptor layer including the at least one area of microwave interactive material and the at least one area devoid of microwave interactive material.
A blank for forming a microwave heating construct, the blank comprising:
- a plurality of adjoined panels, wherein the plurality of adjoined panels comprise a first panel, a second panel joined to the first panel along a first fold area and a third panel joined to the second panel along a second fold area;
- and
- a microwave susceptor attached to a surface of the panel comprising:
- a susceptor layer, wherein the susceptor layer comprises at least one area of microwave interactive material, a first area devoid of microwave interactive material that corresponds to the first fold area, and a second area devoid of microwave interactive material that corresponds to the second fold area;
- a biodegradable substrate attached to the susceptor layer comprised of a biodegradable thin film, wherein the biodegradable thin film covers the susceptor layer including the at least one area of microwave interactive material and the at least one area devoid of microwave interactive material.
