Abstract
A power source for inflation systems. Specific embodiments relate to inflation systems that use an electrically powered inflation system, wherein the power source of the inflation system is a thermal battery. Particular embodiments may find use in connection with inflating evacuation slides or life rafts on board a passenger transportation vehicle, such as an aircraft or marine vessel. Other embodiments may be used for inflating shelters, life vests, or any other inflatable safety device that requires a rapid inflation.
Claims13
An inflation system for an inflatable safety device, comprising:
- an electrically-powered motor;
- a thermal battery that provides a power source for the electrically-powered motor,
- wherein the thermal battery is activated upon a battery activation event, wherein the battery activation event comprises one or more of:
- motion or opening of a vehicle door or handle;
- manual activation via a mechanical connection between the vehicle door or handle and the thermal battery;
- activation or tensioning of a release feature, cable, cord, pin, or webbing;
- electrical activation;
- a signal from a cockpit;
- a standby electrical device;
- wherein once the thermal battery is activated, power from the thermal battery is delivered to the electrically-powered motor upon an inflation initiation event after the battery activation event, wherein powering of the motor causes inflation of the inflatable safety device.
