Abstract
A method of treating a calculi mass can include using an ultrasonic probe to produce acoustic energy and fragment the mass. The method can include varying the frequency at which fragmentation occurs to treat the mass with a resonant frequency. The ultrasonic probe can have a distal tip for contact with the mass, where the tip has a morphology for concentrating stress on the mass. The ultrasonic probe can have two or more ultrasonic horns to allow for higher voltage and power levels.
Claims8
A device for acoustic calculus fracture, the device comprising:
- an acoustic transducer for transferring acoustic energy via the device to fracture a calculus mass;
- and
- an acoustically-transmissive elongated probe coupled to the acoustic transducer, the probe extending between a distal portion and a proximal portion;
- and
- an acoustic horn extending along the probe, wherein the acoustic horn includes a portion of a longitudinal inner lumen passageway and is configured to increase, in a distal direction, amplitude of displacement corresponding to acoustic energy provided by the acoustic transducer,
- wherein the acoustic horn has a continuously tapered wall thickness that decreases in a distal direction over an entire length thereof so as to increase an amplitude of the acoustic energy, and
- wherein the acoustic horn includes a distal tip opening into the inner lumen passageway to permit aspiration of the calculus mass into the inner lumen passageway, and
- wherein a start of the tapered wall thickness of the acoustic horn is located substantially at a most distal stress node and the tapered wall thickness extends therefrom toward the distal tip opening.
