A method for decoupling mitochondrial respiration in a cell comprising contacting the cell with an agent that increases expression and/or activity of PM20D1 polypeptide comprising the sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 2, wherein the step of contacting occurs in vitro, thereby decoupling mitochondrial respiration in the cell.
