Abstract
Compositions comprising a) a metal detergent and b) an acid comprising at least one hydrocarbyl-substituted carboxylic acid. The metal detergent comprises at least one alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or combinations thereof. The weight ratio of the metal detergent a) to the acid b) ranges from 50:1 to 1:10, or 25:1 to 1:10, or 10:1 to 1:10, or 5:1 to 1:7, or 2:1 to 1:3. The compositions may be added to industrial coating or lubricant compositions to reduce corrosion of metal components.
Claims11
A composition comprising:
- a) from greater than 20 to about 40 percent by weight of an overbased calcium sulfonate detergent;
- and
- b) an acid mixture comprising at least two carboxylic acids and at least one hydrocarbyl-substituted organic sulfonic acid that is a mono or di substituted alkylsulfonic acid,
- i. wherein at least one of the carboxylic acids is a C8 to C36 hydrocarbyl-substituted polycarboxylic acid wherein the carboxylic groups are separated by 10 to 20 carbon atoms and at least one of the carboxylic acids is a linear or branched C10 to C18 hydrocarbyl-substituted monocarboxylic acid, wherein the weight ratio of the polycarboxylic acid to the monocarboxylic acid ranges from 3:1 to 1:1, and
- ii. wherein the weight ratio of the at least one hydrocarbyl-substituted organic sulfonic acid to the at least two carboxylic acids ranges from 15:1 to 3:1,
- wherein the weight ratio of a) the overbased calcium sulfonate detergent to b) the acid mixture ranges from 2:1 to 1:3;
- and
- wherein the total base number (“TBN”) of the composition ranges from at least 10 to 65 mg KOH/g.
