Abstract
Retrieval of material from vessel lumens can be improved by electrically enhancing attachment of the material to the thrombectomy system. The system can include a catheter having a distal portion configured to be positioned adjacent to a thrombus in a blood vessel, an electrode disposed at the distal portion of the catheter, and an interventional element configured to be delivered through a lumen of the catheter. The electrode and the interventional element are each configured to be electrically coupled to an extracorporeal power supply.
Claims21
A thrombectomy system comprising:
- a current generator having a first electrical terminal and a second electrical terminal;
- an elongate core member having a proximal portion configured to be electrically coupled to the first electrical terminal and a distal portion configured to be intravascularly positioned at a treatment site within a blood vessel lumen, the core member comprising a conductive shaft that is at least partially covered with an electrically insulative material along its length;
- an interventional element coupled to the distal portion of the core member and in electrical communication with the conductive shaft, the interventional element comprising:
- a tubular mesh body defining a lumen extending from an open proximal end of the mesh to an open distal end of the mesh that is expandable from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration, wherein the lumen is generally cylindrical in the expanded configuration;
- and
- an electrically conductive material deposited over the mesh body;
- and
- a return electrode configured to be electrically coupled to the second electrical terminal.
A thrombectomy device comprising:
- an elongate core member having a proximal portion configured to be electrically coupled to a current generator and a distal portion configured to be intravascularly positioned at a treatment site within a blood vessel lumen, the core member comprising a conductive shaft that is at least partially covered with an electrically insulative material along its length;
- an interventional element coupled to the distal portion of the core member and in electrical communication with the conductive shaft, the interventional element comprising:
- a tubular mesh body comprising a longitudinally open tube that is expandable from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration, wherein a lumen of the tubular mesh is generally cylindrical in the expanded configuration;
- and
- an electrically conductive material deposited over the mesh body.
A method of manufacturing a thrombectomy device, the method comprising:
- laser cutting a tubular mesh body that is expandable from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration, wherein the tubular mesh body defines a lumen extending from an open proximal end of the mesh to an open distal end of the mesh that is generally cylindrical in the expanded configuration;
- depositing an electrically conductive material over the mesh body;
- and
- coupling the tubular mesh body to a distal end portion of an elongate conductive shaft, the shaft configured to extend from a proximal end portion disposed extracorporeally to a distal end portion disposed adjacent an intravascular treatment site.
