## Abstract

A fall-protection system including a harness and a fall-protection apparatus with a lifeline bearing a connector configured to be connected to the harness; and, a fall-protection monitoring system with a base unit and with at least one sensor module configured to sense a condition of the connector and to communicate a signal indicative of the condition of the connector to the base unit.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A fall-protection apparatus comprising a lifeline bearing a gated connector comprising a sensor module installed at the gated connector and configured to sense a condition of the gated connector, the sensor module comprising:
at least one first sensor configured to detect a metal-containing item or portion thereof that is positioned within or close to an opening of the gated connector;
and,
at least one second, gate sensor that is configured to determine whether a gate of the gated connector is in a secured or unsecured condition;
wherein the sensor module is configured to maintain the first sensor in a low-power-consumption state and, if a signal is received from the second, gate sensor that a change in the secured/unsecured condition of the gate has been detected, to activate the first sensor to a high-power-consumption state that is higher than the low-power-consumption state, for a selected period of time;
wherein the sensor module is configured so that if the second, gate sensor detects that the gate is secured, and if, during the selected period of time, the first sensor has detected that the metal-containing item or a portion thereof is positioned within or close to the opening of the gated connector, the sensor module issues a signal indicating a Ready condition of the gated connector;
and,
wherein the first sensor comprises an RFID reader configured to detect an RFID tag installed at a D-ring of a fall-protection safety harness.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The fall-protection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one first sensor, when activated to the high-power-consumption state, has a power consumption that is greater than a power consumption of the at least one second, gate sensor, by a factor of at least ten.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The fall-protection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the sensor module is partially or wholly encompassed within a molded plastic housing that is attached to the gated connector and wherein the sensor module is powered by a battery located within the molded plastic housing.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The fall-protection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fall-protection apparatus comprises a lanyard.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The fall-protection apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fall-protection apparatus is a self-retracting lifeline (SRL).

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The fall-protection apparatus of claim 5 wherein the self-retracting lifeline (SRL) comprises a housing that is attachable to an anchorage of an aerial lift, the housing comprising a drum to which a proximal end of the lifeline is attached, and wherein the gated connector is attached to a distal end of the lifeline of the self-retracting lifeline.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

A fall-protection monitoring system comprising the fall-protection apparatus of claim 1 and comprising a base unit configured to emit a first, Ready notification if the signal is received from the sensor module indicating the Ready condition of the gated connector; and, to emit a second, Not Ready notification if a second, different signal is received from the sensor module indicating a Not Ready condition of the gated connector.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The fall-protection monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the signal indicating the Ready condition of the gated connector is indicative that the gated connector is attached to the D-ring of the fall-protection safety harness of a user of the fall-protection monitoring system; and, wherein the second, different signal indicating the Not Ready condition of the gated connector, is indicative that the gated connector is not attached to the D-ring of the fall-protection safety harness of the user of the fall-protection monitoring system.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

An aerial lift comprising the fall-protection monitoring system of claim 7 wherein the fall-protection apparatus is installed on the aerial lift.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The aerial lift of claim 9 wherein the fall-protection apparatus is a self-retracting lifeline that is secured to an anchorage located on a roof of the aerial lift.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The aerial lift of claim 9 wherein the base unit is mounted on the aerial lift and is configured to wirelessly receive signals from the sensor module.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The aerial lift of claim 11 wherein the base unit comprises a notification module and wherein the base unit is configured to emit the first, Ready notification or the second, Not Ready notification by instructing the notification module to issue the first, Ready notification or the second, Not Ready notification, and wherein the notification module is configured so that the first, Ready notification comprises a green visual signal, and is configured so that the second, Not Ready notification comprises a red visual signal.

### Claim 13 (depends on 9)

The aerial lift of claim 9 wherein the fall-protection system comprises a proximity detector configured to detect whether a user is present on the aerial lift; wherein the fall-protection system is configured so that at least some functions of the base unit and/or the sensor module are disabled when the proximity detector does not detect that the user is present on the aerial lift; and, wherein at least some functions of the base unit and/or the sensor module are enabled when the proximity detector detects that the user is present on the aerial lift.

### Claim 14 (depends on 9)

The aerial lift of claim 9 wherein the aerial lift is configured so that operation of the aerial lift is interlocked with the fall-protection monitoring system so that the aerial lift will not elevate from a lowered position if the base unit of the fall-protection monitoring system sends, to the aerial lift, the second, Not Ready notification indicating that the gated connector appears to not be attached to the fall protection safety harness of a user of the aerial lift.

### Claim 15 (depends on 7)

The fall-protection monitoring system of claim 7 wherein the base unit is co-located with the sensor module on the gated connector and is configured to receive signals from the sensor module non-wirelessly.
