## Abstract

An aspect of an embodiment or partial embodiment of the present invention (or combinations of various embodiments in whole or in part of the present invention) comprises, but not limited thereto, a method and system (and related computer program product) for continually assessing the risk of hypoglycemia for a patient and then determining what action to take based on that risk assessment. A further embodiment results in two outputs: (1) an attenuation factor to be applied to the insulin rate command sent to the pump (either via conventional therapy or via open or closed loop control) and/or (2) a red/yellow/green light hypoglycemia alarm providing to the patient an indication of the risk of hypoglycemia. The two outputs of the CPHS can be used in combination or individually.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of preventing or mitigating hypoglycemia in a subject, the method comprising:
receiving measurements from a metabolic measurement device providing direct metabolic measurements of a subject;
assessing a risk of hypoglycemia in the subject based at least on the received measurements from the metabolic measurement device providing the direct metabolic measurements of the subject;
determining an insulin attenuation factor, the determination of the insulin attenuation factor occurring after the assessing of the risk of hypoglycemia;
providing one or more options as an output addressing the assessed risk of hypoglycemia in the subject, the output instructing the subject to:
a) take no action;
b) attenuate insulin delivery using the determined insulin attenuation factor;
c) take additional intervention; or
d) attenuate insulin delivery using the determined insulin attenuation factor and take additional intervention.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, comprising:
calculating the attenuation factor based on the assessed risk of hypoglycemia.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, comprising:
implementing a safety supervision function that calculates the attenuation factor.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, comprising:
evaluating a risk of hypoglycemia based on the assessed risk of hypoglycemia.

### Claim 5

A system for preventing or mitigating hypoglycemia in a subject, the system comprising one or more processors configured for:
receiving measurements from a metabolic measurement device providing direct metabolic measurements of a subject;
assessing a risk of hypoglycemia in the subject based at least on the received measurements from the metabolic measurement device providing the direct metabolic measurements of the subject;
determining an insulin attenuation factor, the determination of the insulin attenuation factor occurring after the assessing of the risk of hypoglycemia;
providing one or more options as an output addressing the assessed risk of hypoglycemia in the subject, the output instructing the subject to:
a) take no action;
b) attenuate insulin delivery using the determined insulin attenuation factor;
c) take additional intervention; or
d) attenuate insulin delivery using the determined insulin attenuation factor and take additional intervention.
