Abstract
An interbody implant to be introduced into a variety of target sites for accelerating bone ossification, for example into a space between two adjacent vertebrae. The interbody implant includes a first bone contacting surface, a second bone contacting surface, a body defined between the first and second bone contacting surfaces, and a plurality of resonators. Mechanical waves, e.g., low intensity pulsed ultrasound waves, may be transmitted to the location of the implant, causing the resonators to resonate and accelerate bone ossification.
Claims21
A method comprising:
- implanting, in a patient, an interbody implant having a plurality of resonators between adjacent vertebrae, wherein a length of each of the resonators is configured to resonate at a predetermined frequency of an external wave generator;
- and
- transmitting from outside the patient, by the wave generator, mechanical waves towards the implanted interbody implant at the predetermined frequency, thereby causing the plurality of resonators to resonate at the predetermined frequency to promote bone growth.
An intervertebral implant, comprising:
- a first bone contacting surface;
- a second bone contacting surface;
- a body defined between the first and second bone contacting surfaces, and adapted to be implanted into a patient;
- and
- a plurality of resonators at any one of (i) the first bone contacting surface, (ii) the second bone contacting surface, (iii) the body, or (iv) any combination of (i), (ii), and (iii), wherein a length of each of the resonators is configured to resonate at a predetermined frequency of an external wave generator located outside the patient.
