Abstract
Device Assisted Services (DAS) for protecting network capacity is provided. In some embodiments, DAS for protecting network capacity includes monitoring a network service usage activity of the communications device in network communication; classifying the network service usage activity for differential network access control for protecting network capacity; and associating the network service usage activity with a network service usage control policy based on a classification of the network service usage activity to facilitate differential network access control for protecting network capacity.
Claims20
A wireless end-user device comprising:
- a wireless modem;
- a memory;
- a first application stored in the memory;
- and
- a processor configured to:
- receive data from the first application for transmission, via the wireless mode, over a wireless network;
- monitor, within the wireless end-user device, the data received from the first application to determine a first network data usage of the first application;
- classify the first network data usage based on the first application associated with the first network data usage to provide a first classification and to allow for a differential network access control, wherein the differential network access control has a plurality of data usage control policies including a first data usage control policy that allows for current transmission of the data over the wireless network destination via the wireless modem, and a second data usage control policy that defers transmission of the data over the wireless network destination via the wireless modem until there is a state change in the wireless end-user device;
- dynamically associate the first network data usage with one of the plurality of data usage control policies, based on the first classification and a state of the wireless end-user device;
- and
- transmit the data received from the first application, over the wireless network via the wireless modem, according to the dynamically associated one of the data usage control policies for the first network data usage.
A method for use by a wireless end-user device including a wireless modem and a memory storing a first application, the method comprising:
- receiving data from the first application for transmission, via the wireless mode, over a wireless network;
- monitoring, wireless end-user device, wireless end-user device, the data received from the first application to determine a first network data usage of the first application;
- classifying the first network data usage based on the first application associated with the first network data usage to provide a first classification and to allow for a differential network access control, wherein the differential network access control has a plurality of data usage control policies including a first data usage control policy that allows for current transmission of the data over the wireless network destination via the wireless modem, and a second data usage control policy that defers transmission of the data over the wireless network destination via the wireless modem until there is a state change in the wireless end-user device;
- dynamically associating the first network data usage with one of the plurality of data usage control policies, based on the first classification and a state of the wireless end-user device;
- and
- transmitting the data received from the first application, over the wireless network via the wireless modem, according to the dynamically associated one of the data usage control policies for the first network data usage.
