Abstract
A sodium-chlorine generator generates electricity. Chlorine gas is combined with sodium metal in a boiler. The reaction is exothermic and generates sodium chloride as a biproduct. The heat can be used to boil water to generate steam. The steam generated can be used to turn a turbine, which produces electricity. The reactor can use a heat exchanger to connect a boiler that is separated from reactor. The rate and output of the reaction can be changed by pressurizing the chlorine gas with the reactor and by preheating the sodium before the reaction. The sodium chloride can be recycled to generate sodium metal and chlorine gas for a subsequent use.
Claims14
A sodium-chlorine boiler for generating electricity, comprising:
- a chlorine gas supply storing chlorine gas;
- a sodium metal supply storing sodium metal;
- a combustion chamber receiving said chlorine gas from said chlorine gas supply and said sodium metal form said sodium metal supply, said chlorine gas and said sodium metal reacting in said combustion chamber to produce heat;
- a water tube duct holding water and being disposed in said combustion chamber, said water being boiled by the heat to produce steam;
- and
- a turbine being connected to said water tube duct, said turbine being turned by the steam to generate electricity.
A sodium-chlorine boiler for generating electricity, comprising:
- a chlorine gas supply storing chlorine gas;
- a sodium metal supply storing sodium metal;
- a combustion chamber receiving said chlorine gas from said chlorine gas supply and said sodium metal form said sodium metal supply, said chlorine gas and said sodium metal reacting in said combustion chamber to produce heat;
- a heat exchanger having a water tube for holding water to be boiled to steam therein;
- a tube holding a heat conducting liquid being disposed in said combustion chamber, said heat conducting liquid being heated by the heat, said tube further being connected to said heat exchanger, said heat conducting liquid boiling said water in said water tube to generate steam;
- and
- a turbine being connected to said water tube duct, said turbine being turned by the steam to generate electricity.
A pressurized-cycle sodium-chlorine boiler for generating electricity, comprising:
- a chlorine gas supply storing chlorine gas;
- a sodium metal supply storing sodium metal;
- a combustion chamber receiving said chlorine gas from said chlorine gas supply and said sodium metal form said sodium metal supply, said chlorine gas and said sodium metal reacting in said combustion chamber to produce heat, said chlorine gas being pressurized above one atmosphere while in said combustion chamber;
- a water tube duct holding water and being disposed in said combustion chamber, said water being boiled by the heat to produce steam;
- and
- a turbine being connected to said water tube duct, said turbine being turned by the steam to generate electricity.
