Abstract
Arthroplasty components include an articular surface and a bone-facing surface. The bone-facing surface includes a concave arrangement of planar surfaces which converge as they approach a middle portion of the articular surface. Instruments and implantation methods are also disclosed.

A method for reaming a planar bone resection on a humeral head and installing a prosthetic humeral component thereon, the method comprising:
- placing a working portion of a planar reamer adjacent a humeral head, the working portion comprising a bone-facing side having one or more cutting features;
- rotating a shaft of the planar reamer coupled to the working portion;
- reaming a planar bone resection on the humeral head as the working portion rotates against the humeral head;
- removing the working portion of the planar reamer from the planar bone resection reamed on humeral head;
- placing a prosthetic humeral component on the planar bone resection;
- and
- engaging a planar surface of the prosthetic humeral component with the planar bone resection reamed on the humeral head to install the prosthetic humeral component on the humeral head.
A method for reaming a planar bone resection on a humeral head and installing a prosthetic humeral component thereon, the method comprising:
- placing a working portion of a planar reamer adjacent the humeral head, the working portion comprising one or more cutting features;
- rotating a shaft of the planar reamer coupled to the working portion;
- reaming a planar bone resection on the humeral head as the working portion rotates against the humeral head;
- removing the working portion from the humeral head;
- performing at least one additional bone resection on the humeral head to remove bone from a periphery of the planar bone resection to provide a peripheral resection on the humeral head to prepare the humeral head to receive a bone-facing side of the prosthetic humeral component;
- and
- placing the prosthetic humeral component on the humeral head such that the bone-facing side of the prosthetic humeral component receives and engages the planar bone resection and the peripheral resection.
A method for reaming a planar bone resection on a humeral head and installing a prosthetic humeral component thereon, the method comprising:
- placing a working portion of a planar reamer adjacent the humeral head, the working portion comprising one or more cutting features;
- rotating a shaft of the planar reamer coupled to the working portion;
- reaming the planar bone resection to a predetermined depth, as the working portion rotates against the humeral head, to remove a natural articular surface of the humeral head;
- removing the working portion from the humeral head;
- and
- placing a prosthetic humeral component on the humeral head, the prosthetic humeral component comprising an artificial articular surface;
- wherein the predetermined depth of the planar bone resection determines a height at which the artificial articular surface protrudes above the planar bone resection such that the artificial articular surface replaces the natural articular surface.
