A controller area network (CAN) node for communicating through a first CAN bus as a member of a set of communicatively coupled CAN nodes in an auxiliary network, the set of communicatively coupled CAN nodes configured to act as a vehicle-carried warning system when deployed in an automobile, the automobile having a second CAN bus for its QEM network that is independent from the auxiliary network, the vehicle-carried warning system including an output device and an input device, the output device configured to change an output status representing a state of a light or a siren for the vehicle-carried warning system, the input device configured to change an input status in response to a state of a user or an automobile input, each member of the set having, and configured to monitor status of, one or both input and output devices for establishing the vehicle-carried warning system, the CAN node comprising:
- a non-transitory machine-readable storage device configured to store machine-readable instructions representing a behavioral equation that defines a configurable relationship between a global variable and a device status of the CAN node, the global variable acting as a shared data structure maintained by the set of communicatively coupled CAN nodes for representing one of the input status or the output status;
- and
- processor circuitry that, in response to execution of the machine-readable instructions, evaluates the behavioral equation and generates a CAN message in response to an event changing the input status associated with the input device, the CAN message configured to be broadcast over the first CAN bus to update the output status associated to the output device, the CAN message including a value obtained from evaluation of the behavioral equation and a key identifying the global variable to be updated by other members of the set of communicatively coupled CAN nodes.
