Abstract
A hydrogenation catalyst includes copper oxide, an alkali metal, and an acid-stabilized silica, wherein hydrogenation catalyst has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (“BET”) surface area of greater than or equal to about 15 m2/g. The hydrogenation catalysts are effective for converting aldehydes, ketones, and esters to alcohols and/or diesters to diols.
Claims20
A hydrogenation catalyst comprising:
- copper oxide;
- an alkali metal component;
- and
- an acid-stabilized silica;
- wherein the hydrogenation catalyst has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (“BET”) surface area of greater than or equal to about 15 m2/g.
A method of hydrogenating a ketone or aldehyde, comprising contacting the ketone or aldehyde with a hydrogenation catalyst comprising:
- copper oxide;
- an alkali metal component;
- and
- an acid-stabilized silica;
- wherein the hydrogenation catalyst has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (“BET”) surface area of greater than or equal to about 15 m2/g.
A method of synthesizing butanediol, comprising:
- contacting a stream of dimethyl maleate with a hydrogenation catalyst comprising:
- copper oxide;
- an alkali metal component;
- and
- an acid-stabilized silica;
- wherein:
- the hydrogenation catalyst has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (“BET”) surface area of greater than or equal to about 15 m2/g;
- and
- the silica is formed from an acid-stabilized silica solution having a pH of less than about 3.5.
A method of hydrogenating an ester, comprising contacting the ester with a hydrogenation catalyst comprising:
- copper oxide;
- an alkali metal component;
- and
- an acid-stabilized silica;
- wherein the hydrogenation catalyst has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (“BET”) surface area of greater than or equal to about 15 m2/g.
