Abstract
A parking brake for a wheel rotor having a brake pad associated therewith includes a housing defining first and second passages. First and second pistons are provided in the respective first and second passages. Spindles extend into and are connected with each piston. A clutch unit is connected to the spindles and includes a motor. The clutch unit has a first condition allowing for rotation of the spindles in response to hydraulic pressure applied to the pistons such that the pistons are axially movable within the passages and relative to the spindles into engagement with the brake pad. The clutch unit has a second condition for rotating the spindles to drive the pistons into the brake pad and apply the parking brake.
Claims27
A parking brake for a wheel rotor having a brake pad associated therewith, comprising:
- a housing defining first and second passages;
- first and second pistons provided in the respective first and second passages and being movable along respective first and second axes;
- spindles extending into and connected with each piston;
- a motor;
- and
- a clutch unit associated with the spindles and including a rotating member, the clutch unit having a first condition such that the spindles rotate in response to hydraulic pressure applied to the pistons such that the pistons are axially movable within the passages and relative to the spindles into engagement with the brake pad, the clutch unit having a second condition in which the spindles rotate to drive the pistons into the brake pad and apply the parking brake, the clutch unit moving into the second condition in response to rotation of the motor, the rotating member being rotatable about an axis extending parallel to the first and second axes to move the clutch unit between the first and second conditions, the rotating member being stationary while the spindles rotate when the clutch unit is in the first condition and when the clutch unit is in the second condition.
A parking brake for a wheel rotor having a brake pad associated therewith, comprising:
- a housing defining a passage;
- a piston provided in the passage;
- a spindle extending into and connected with the piston and rotatable about a first axis;
- a motor;
- and
- a clutch unit associated with the spindle and including a rotating member extending over an end of the spindle, the clutch unit having a first condition such that the spindle rotates in a first direction in response to hydraulic pressure applied to the piston such that the piston is axially movable within the passage and relative to the spindle into engagement with the brake pad, the clutch unit having a second condition such that the spindle is rotatable in the first direction to drive the piston into the brake pad and apply the parking brake while being prevented from rotating in a second direction opposite the first direction, the clutch unit moving into the second condition in response to rotation of the motor.
