## Abstract

A contactless integrated circuit (IC) card reader configured to communicate with a contactless IC card includes an antenna circuit, a variable amplifier that amplifies a carrier signal at an amplification gain and outputs the amplified carrier signal to the antenna circuit as a transmit signal, a variable attenuator that attenuates a receive signal received through the antenna circuit at an attenuation ratio, and a controller that controls the amplification gain and the attenuation ratio based on the attenuated receive signal.

## Claims

a variable attenuator configured to attenuate a receive signal received through the antenna circuit at an attenuation ratio; and
a controller configured to decrease both the amplification gain of the variable amplifier and the attenuation ratio of the variable attenuator under a condition in which a level of the receive signal is smaller than a reference level.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 1, further comprises:
a transmission circuit configured to generate the carrier signal; and
a reception circuit configured to filter the carrier signal from the attenuated receive signal and to generate a filtered receive signal.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 2, further comprising:
a signal processing unit configured to modulate information to be provided to the contactless IC card using amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation, to control the transmission circuit based on the modulated information, and to demodulate the filtered receive signal using ASK demodulation to identify data provided from the contactless IC card.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 1, wherein the receive signal is generated through use of a passive load modulation (PLM) performed by the contactless IC card.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to set the amplification gain of the variable amplifier as a maximum value.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 5, wherein the controller is further configured to decrease both the amplification gain of the variable amplifier and the attenuation ratio of the variable attenuator based on the level of the receive signal.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 1, wherein the carrier signal has a frequency of 13.56 MHz.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 1, further comprises:
a type manager configured to determine a near field communication (NFC) type of the contactless IC card.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 8, wherein the controller is further configured to:
when the determined NFC type is a first type, adjust the amplification gain into a first maximum value and the attenuation ratio into a second maximum value; and
when the determined NFC type is a second type different from the first type, adjust the amplification gain into a first value smaller than the first maximum value and the attenuation ratio into a second value smaller than the second maximum value.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 9, wherein the second type corresponds to a type-V which is based on a sub-carrier signal having a frequency of 424 KHz or 484 KHz.

### Claim 11

A contactless integrated circuit (IC) card reader configured to communicate with a contactless IC card, comprising:
an antenna circuit;
a variable amplifier configured to amplify a carrier signal at an amplification gain and to output the amplified carrier signal to the antenna circuit as a transmission signal;
a variable attenuator configured to attenuate a receive signal received through the antenna circuit at an attenuation ratio;
a reception circuit configured to filter the carrier signal from the attenuated receive signal and to generate a filtered receive signal; and
a controller configured to compare an amplitude of the filtered receive signal with a reference level, and to decrease the amplification gain of the variable amplifier when the amplitude of the filtered receive signal is smaller than the reference level,
wherein the controller is further configured to decrease the attenuation ratio of the variable attenuator as the amplification gain of the variable amplifier is decreased.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The contactless IC card reader of claim 11, further comprises:
