## Abstract

A small form factor pluggable (“SP”) transceiver for use in a communications network includes a transmitter adapted to be coupled to the network for supplying signals to the network, a receiver adapted to be coupled to the network for receiving signals from the network, and a programmable signal processing module coupled to the transmitter and the receiver and adapted to be programmed from a remote station coupled to the network. The module can be programmed to perform at least one service or management function on the network.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A system for providing at least one service assurance function or at least one service management function on a network, the system comprising:
a programmable processor coupled to a small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver configured to be coupled to said network at a network node, the programmable processor providing said at least one service assurance function or said at least one service management function;
a remote node configured for discovering the programmable processor, and configured for remotely re-programming said programmable processor,
wherein said programmable processor is configured to detect a predetermined message from the remote node, and to respond to the predetermined message to indicate that the programmable processor is coupled to the network; and
a memory coupled to the programmable processor, the memory storing a plurality of sets of service assurance or service management functions, wherein each set consumes a different amount of power,
wherein the remote node remotely re-programs the programmable processor by instructing the programmable processor to execute one of the plurality of sets of service assurance or service management functions to comply with a power limitation requirement.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the remote node remotely re-programs the programmable processor by downloading one or more service assurance functions or service management functions from a remote station coupled to the network.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The system of claim 2, in which the one or more service assurance functions comprises is selected from a group consisting of:
(i) monitoring network traffic and diagnosing network traffic issues,
(ii) performing remote in-service Layer 1-4 loopback,
(iii) ITU-T Y.1564 and RFC-2544 performance testing, and
(iv) monitoring actual customer statistics from a web browser or portable test set.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The system of claim 2, further comprising a plurality of standard SFP ports coupled to the network at the network node, wherein the remote station is configured to program the programmable processor to loopback one or more test packets by swapping media access control (MAC) and internet protocol (IP) addresses in the one or more test packets and inserting the one or more test packets in one or more network paths of the plurality of standard SFP ports.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The system of claim 2, further comprising a plurality of standard SFP ports coupled to the network at the network node,
wherein the programmable processor is configured as an embedded traffic generator; and wherein the remote station is configured to program the embedded traffic generator to generate one or more test packets to insert in one or more network paths of the plurality of standard SFP ports.

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

The system of claim 2, wherein the remote node is co-located with the remote station.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the remote node remotely re-programs the programmable processor on an as-needed basis.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, further comprising a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), wherein the FPGA is programmed to perform said at least one service assurance function or said at least one service management function.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein said at least one service assurance function is selected from a group consisting of:
(v) monitoring network traffic and diagnosing network traffic issues,
(vi) performing remote in-service Layer 1-4 loopback,
(vii) ITU-T Y.1564 and RFC-2544 performance testing, and
(viii) monitoring actual customer statistics from a web browser or portable test set.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein said at least one service management function is selected from a group consisting of: policing, traffic shaping, and VLAN mapping.

### Claim 11

A method for providing at least one service assurance function or at least one service management function on a network, the method comprising:
discovering a programmable processor coupled with a small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver configured to be coupled to said network at a network node by detecting a predetermined message from a remote node; and
remotely re-programming the programmable processor to perform said at least one service assurance function or said at least one service management function, wherein said remotely re-programming comprises instructing the programmable processor to execute one of a plurality of sets of service assurance or service management functions, each set consuming a different amount of power, to comply with a power limitation requirement.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein said remotely re-programming comprises downloading one or more service assurance functions or one or more service management functions from a remote station coupled to the network.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, in which the one or more service assurance functions is selected from a group consisting of monitoring network traffic and diagnosing network traffic issues, performing remote in-service Layer 1-4 loopback, ITU-T Y.1564 and RFC-2544 performance testing, and monitoring actual customer statistics from a web browser or portable test set.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising programing the programmable processor to loopback one or more test packets by swapping media access control (MAC) and internet protocol (IP) addresses in the one or more test packets and inserting the one or more test packets in one or more network paths of a plurality of standard SFPs in a plurality of standard SFP ports provided at a first network node.
