## Abstract

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for fast digital signal processor (DSP) optical receiver recovery, namely for optical modems configured on a client side. This approach can be used in optical protection switching (OPS) applications to allow switching between two client links fast, i.e., within 50 ms. A receiver (Rx) digital signal processor (DSP) in an optical receiver includes circuitry configured to detect traffic is interrupted on a current link, enter a holdoff period, and one of i) receive good traffic during the holdoff period and ii) have the holdoff period expire that causes a notification to a host device and retrain to acquire an optical signal.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A receiver (Rx) digital signal processor (DSP) in an optical receiver, the Rx DSP comprises circuitry configured to:
detect traffic is interrupted on a current link associated with the optical receiver,
enter a holdoff period where no loss of signal (LOS) or loss of light (LOL) is reported while an optical signal associated with the traffic i) is switched to a new link or ii) recovers from disruption on the current link, and
one of i) receive good traffic during the holdoff period and ii) have the holdoff period expire that a) causes a notification to a host device and b) retrain the RX DSP to acquire the optical signal to receive the traffic on the new link or current link, wherein the Rx DSP is retrained to determine various settings on the optical receiver.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the circuitry is configured to
refrain, during the holdoff period, from a retrain to acquire the optical signal and refrain from any notification to the host device.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the circuitry is configured to
change settings, after entering the holdoff period, for the optical signal to one of default settings and predetermined settings for the new link.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein settings for the optical signal are maintained during the holdoff period.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the notification includes one or more of loss of signal (LOS) and loss of light (LOL).

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the circuitry is further configured to receive a configuration whereby the holdoff period is used.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the circuitry is further configured to
responsive to receiving the good traffic during the holdoff period, continue to process the good traffic and retrain on the optical signal while the good traffic is processed.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the optical receiver is connected to an optical protection switch (OPS).

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the optical receiver is connected to an optical coupler whereby two different links including the current link are capable of sending the optical signal.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The Rx DSP of claim 9, wherein corresponding optical transmitters on the two different links are configured for fast turn off and turn on.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the optical signal includes non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulation.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the optical signal includes pulse amplitude modulation (PAM).

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein the optical signal includes coherent modulation.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The Rx DSP of claim 1, wherein a transmitter for the current link and a transmitter for protection link settings are adjusted such that there is no need to adjust the Rx DSP when switching between links.

### Claim 15

A method implemented in a receiver (Rx) digital signal processor (DSP) in an optical receiver, the method comprises steps of:
detecting traffic is interrupted on a current link associated with the optical receiver,
entering a holdoff period where no loss of signal (LOL) or loss of light (LOL) is reported while an optical signal associated with the traffic is i) switched to a new link or ii) recovers from disruption on the current link, and
one of i) receiving good traffic during the holdoff period and ii) having the holdoff period expire that a) causes a notification to a host device and b) retraining the Rx DSP to acquire an optical signal to receive the traffic on the new link or the current link, wherein the retraining includes determining various settings on the optical receiver.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, wherein the steps include
refraining, during the holdoff period, from retraining the optical signal and refraining from any notification to the host device.

### Claim 17 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, wherein the steps include
changing settings, after entering the holdoff period, for the optical signal to one of default settings and predetermined settings for the new link.

### Claim 18 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, wherein settings for an optical signal are maintained during the holdoff period.

### Claim 19 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, wherein the steps further include
receiving a configuration whereby the holdoff period is used.

### Claim 20 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15, wherein the steps further include
responsive to receiving the good traffic during the holdoff period, continuing to process the good traffic and retrain on the optical signal while the good traffic is processed.
