## Abstract

A system and method are disclosed in which a symbol associated with an ATM of a plurality of ATMs is made available to a customer in response to a request for access to the ATM. The symbol identifies the ATM to the user in locations having multiple ATMs, thus avoiding confusion for the user. The symbol may be used for any of the possible transactions between the user and the ATM, such as balance inquiries, deposits, transfers, and cash withdrawals.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method comprising:
receiving, by an automatic teller machine (ATM) from a server, a first graphical symbol assigned to a first pre-staged transaction;
displaying, by the ATM, the first graphical symbol;
receiving, by the ATM from a mobile device via a near-field communication NFC) protocol, the first graphical symbol;
determining, by the ATM, whether the first graphical symbol received from the server matches the first graphical symbol received from the mobile device; and
when the NFC protocol is established between the ATM and the mobile device and the first graphical symbol received from the server matches the first graphical symbol received from the mobile device, automatically processing, by the ATM, the first pre-staged transaction.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
sensing, by the ATM, that the mobile device is within a NFC range of the ATM; and
automatically retrieving, by the ATM, the first graphical symbol from the mobile device via the NFC protocol.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
sensing, by the ATM, that the mobile device is within a NFC range of the ATM; and
visually displaying or audibly emitting, by the ATM, a prompt instructing a user to perform an action to initiate transfer of the first graphical symbol from the mobile device to the ATM.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
receiving the first graphical symbol from the server when an amount of funds in the ATM is sufficient to process the first pre-staged transaction.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
ceasing to display, by the ATM, the first graphical symbol after processing the first pre-staged transaction.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, further comprising:
after the ATM ceases to display the first graphical symbol, receiving, by the ATM from the server, a second graphical symbol assigned to a second pre-staged transaction; and
displaying, by the ATM, the second graphical symbol.

### Claim 7

An apparatus comprising:
a processor;
a near-field communication (NFC) device;
a display device; and
a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
receive, from a server, a first graphical symbol assigned to a first pre-staged transaction;
display the first graphical symbol on the display device;
receive, from a mobile device via the NFC device and a NFC protocol, the first graphical symbol;
determine whether the first graphical symbol received from the server matches the first graphical symbol received from the mobile device; and
when the NFC protocol is established with the mobile device and the first graphical symbol received from the server matches the first graphical symbol received from the mobile device, automatically process first pre-staged transaction.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
sense that the mobile device is within a NFC range of the NFC device; and
automatically retrieve the first graphical symbol from the mobile device via the NFC protocol.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The apparatus of claim 7,
wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
sense that the mobile device is within a NFC range of the NFC device; and
visually display or audibly emit a prompt instructing a user to perform an action to initiate transfer of the first graphical symbol from the mobile device to the NFC device.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
receive the first graphical symbol from the server when an amount of funds available to the processor is sufficient to process the first pre-staged transaction.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
cease displaying the first graphical symbol on the display device after processing the first pre-staged transaction.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
after ceasing to display the first graphical symbol, receive, from the server, a second graphical symbol assigned to a second pre-staged transaction; and
display the second graphical symbol on the display device.

### Claim 13

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:
receive, from a server, a first graphical symbol assigned to a first pre-staged transaction;
display the first graphical symbol on a display device;
receive, from a mobile device via a near-field communication (NFC) protocol, the first graphical symbol;
determine whether the first graphical symbol received from the server matches the first graphical symbol received from the mobile device; and
when the NFC protocol is established with the mobile device and the first graphical symbol received from the server matches the first graphical symbol received from the mobile device, automatically process first pre-staged transaction.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
sense that the mobile device is within a NFC range of an NFC device; and
automatically retrieve the first graphical symbol from the mobile device via the NFC protocol.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
sense that the mobile device is within a NFC range of an NFC device; and
visually display or audibly emit a prompt instructing a user to perform an action to initiate transfer of the first graphical symbol from the mobile device to the NFC device.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
receive the first graphical symbol from the server when an amount of funds available to the processor is sufficient to process the first pre-staged transaction.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
cease displaying the first graphical symbol on the display device after processing the first pre-staged transaction.
