## Abstract

There is provided a system and method of cleaning surfaces of an enclosable environment of a contamination comprising a microbial and viral load. The method includes the steps of sealing the enclosable environment and placing water, and a solid or gel pack, into a container and generating a vortex the container by rotating an impeller. The agitation causes the solid or gel pack to release a gaseous cleaning agent. An air-borne spray exiting from the container spreads throughout the enclosable environment to contact the surfaces to be cleaned within the enclosable environment. The enclosable environment is maintained closed for an effective time period while the air-borne spray dwells on the surfaces to eliminate or substantially reduce the load of the contamination.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for treating malodor or surfaces within an environment of a microbial or viral contamination, the method comprising:
placing an apparatus in the environment that has malodor or surfaces having a microbial or viral contamination, the apparatus comprising: a container having therein water with a solid or a gel pak that upon contact with water releases a gaseous cleaning agent, wherein the container includes a lid with a nozzle;
agitating the water within the container of the apparatus with an impeller configured to cause the water to form a vortex, the agitating causing the solid or gel pack to release a gaseous cleaning agent, the vortex generating an air-borne spray comprising the gaseous cleaning agent that flows upward and out of the container from the nozzle into the environment, the lid configured for knocking out at least some entrained liquid from the air-borne spray prior to exit from the nozzle;
allowing the gaseous cleaning agent of the air-borne spray to dwell in the environment for an effective time to reduce the malodor or the microbial or viral contamination on the surfaces.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the apparatus includes a detector and indicator to indicate when a concentration of the gaseous cleaning agent has reduced to a safe level.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the apparatus includes a motor and a step of activating the motor of the apparatus is carried out remotely.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the effective time is in a range from about 10 to about 30 minutes.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the impeller is driven by a motor.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the gaseous cleaning agent comprises chlorine dioxide.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the microbial or viral contamination of a particular contaminating species is reduced by at least 80%.

### Claim 8

A method for treating malodor or surfaces in an environment, the environment having a microbial or viral contamination, the method comprising:
placing an apparatus inside the environment, the apparatus comprising: a container configured to contain therein water with a solid or a gel pak that, upon contact with water, releases a gaseous cleaning agent comprising chlorine dioxide, wherein the container includes a lid with a nozzle;
agitating water and a solid or gel pak that releases chlorine dioxide within the container of the apparatus with an impeller in the container configured to cause the water to form a vortex, the agitating generating an air-borne spray from the nozzle into the environment, the lid configured for knocking out at least some entrained liquid from the air-borne spray prior to exit from the nozzle; and
allowing the air-borne spray to dwell in the environment for an effective time.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the apparatus is configured to fit inside a cup-holder inside a cabin of a vehicle.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the apparatus includes a detector and indicator to indicate when a concentration of the gaseous cleaning agent has reduced to a safe level.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the apparatus includes a motor driving the impeller and a step of activating the motor of the apparatus to drive the impeller is carried out remotely.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the effective time is in a range from about 10 to about 30 minutes.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the impeller is driven by a motor.
