Abstract
A method for making a ceramic body comprised of a ceramic material having an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth is provided. A dental prosthesis may be made of a ceramic material that comprises a molybdenum-containing component on a portion of the prosthesis that contacts the gingival surface of a patient. In one method, a porous zirconia ceramic structure is shaped in the form of a dental prosthesis, and then infiltrated with a molybdenum-containing composition, before sintering to densify the ceramic structure.
Claims14
A ceramic body for use in making a sintered ceramic dental implant for a patient, comprising
- a porous zirconia ceramic body comprising the shape of a dental implant having a first portion that corresponds with a portion of the sintered ceramic dental implant configured to contact a subgingival surface of the patient,
- wherein the first portion is comprised of a first zirconia ceramic material comprising 0.001 mol % to 2 mol % of molybdenum calculated as a metal ion,
- wherein the first zirconia ceramic material exhibits an inhibitory effect on the growth of P. gingivalis, and a reduction of at least 80% compared to a control sample when tested according to ASTM E2180-07 (2012).
A sintered ceramic dental implant for a patient, comprising
- a sintered zirconia ceramic body comprising the shape of a dental implant configured to contact a subgingival surface of the patient,
- wherein the sintered zirconia ceramic body comprises 0.001 mol % to 2 mol % of molybdenum calculated as a metal ion,
- wherein the sintered zirconia ceramic body exhibits an inhibitory effect on the growth of P. gingivalis, and a reduction of at least 80% compared to a control sample when tested according to ASTM E2180-07 (2012).
