Abstract
A turbofan engine has a fan portion in fluid communication with a core stream and a bypass stream of air separated by splitters disposed both upstream and downstream of the fan portion. A blade splitter (shroud) on the fan partially spans the fan blade thus separating the core and bypass streams downstream while leaving a gap upstream for communication between the flows. The communication gap expands the operational range of the fan over fans without the communication gap.
Claims15
A turbofan engine comprising:
- a first fan in fluid communication with a core stream and a bypass stream and configured to compress the core stream and the bypass stream;
- a core compressor portion configured to compress the core stream;
- a core turbine portion connected to a shaft and configured to:
- heat and expand the core stream, and
- drive the first fan and the core compressor portion;
- a midspan partial shroud disposed on the first fan and extending axially forward from proximate a trailing edge of the first fan to at least a midchord of the first fan;
- a downstream splitter, wherein
- the midspan partial shroud and the downstream splitter are configured to separate the core stream and bypass stream;
- an additional splitter;
- a first seal disposed between a trailing edge of the midspan partial shroud and a leading edge of the downstream splitter, wherein the first seal is configured to restrict flow between the core stream and the bypass stream;
- a second fan disposed upstream of the first fan and comprising a second midspan partial shroud extending axially from a trailing edge of the second fan to at least to a local midchord of a blade of the second fan but short of a leading edge of the second fan;
- and
- a second seal connecting a trailing edge of the second midspan partial shroud with a leading edge of the additional splitter.
