Abstract
A surgical stapling instrument. Various embodiments include an actuation system for selectively generating a plurality of control motions. A surgical end effector is operably coupled to the actuation system. The actuation system interfaces with an actuation member configured to operably engage rotatable camming members to fire staples within the end effector into forming contact with an anvil portion of the end effector.
Claims16
A surgical instrument, comprising:
- a shaft assembly, comprising:
- an anvil jaw movable between an unclamped position and a clamped position;
- a cartridge jaw comprising a channel;
- an actuator moveable through a closure motion to move said anvil jaw into said clamped position;
- an I-beam configured to engage said anvil jaw and said cartridge jaw during a firing stroke and hold said anvil jaw in position relative to said cartridge jaw;
- and
- a drive shaft configured to drive said I-beam;
- a detachable motor control unit, comprising:
- a motor-driven rotary clamping gear train operable to drive said drive shaft to apply a rotary closure motion to said actuator to drive said actuator through said closure motion;
- and
- a motor-driven rotary firing gear train, wherein said motor-driven rotary firing gear train is operable to drive said drive shaft to apply a distal motion to said I-beam to drive said I-beam distally through said firing stroke, and wherein said motor-driven rotary firing gear train is operable independently from said motor-driven rotary clamping gear train;
- and
- a control system configured to prohibit said firing stroke from being performed prior to said closure motion.
10 more elements
A surgical instrument, comprising:
- a shaft assembly, comprising:
- an anvil jaw;
- a cartridge jaw comprising a channel, wherein at least one of said anvil jaw and cartridge jaw is moveable from an open position to a closed position;
- an actuator moveable through a closure motion to close said anvil jaw;
- and
- an I-beam configured to engage said anvil jaw and said cartridge jaw during a firing stroke and hold said anvil jaw in position relative to said cartridge jaw;
- a detachable motor control unit, comprising:
- a motor-driven rotary closure interface to interface with said shaft assembly, wherein said motor-driven rotary closure interface is operable to drive said actuator through said closure motion;
- and
- a motor-driven rotary firing interface to interface with said shaft assembly, wherein said motor-driven rotary firing interface is operable to drive said I-beam distally through said firing stroke, and wherein said motor-driven rotary firing interface is operable independently from said motor-driven rotary closure interface;
- and
- a control system configured to prohibit said motor-driven rotary firing interface from being operated prior to said anvil jaw being closed;
- wherein the shaft assembly further comprises a drive shaft configured to interface with said I-beam, wherein said motor-driven rotary closure interface is configured to interface with said drive shaft, wherein said drive shaft is configured to apply a rotary closure motion to said actuator to drive said actuator through said closure motion, and wherein said drive shaft is configured to apply a distal motion to said I-beam to drive said I-beam distally through said firing stroke.
10 more elements
A surgical instrument, comprising:
- an end effector, comprising:
- a first jaw;
- and
- a second jaw moveable relative to said first jaw from an open position to a closed position, and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises:
- a shaft assembly operably interfacing with said end effector, wherein said shaft assembly comprises:
- a closure actuator configured to move said second jaw between the open position and the closed position;
- and
- a drive shaft configured to move axially through said end effector during a firing stroke, wherein said drive shaft is configured to apply a rotary closure motion to said closure actuator, and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises:
- a detachable motor control unit, comprising:
- a motor-driven rotary closure interface to apply a rotary closure actuation motion to said drive shaft to cause said drive shaft to apply said rotary closure motion to said closure actuator to move said second jaw from the open position to the closed position;
- and
- a motor-driven rotary firing interface to apply an axial firing motion to said drive shaft to drive said drive shaft distally during said firing stroke, and wherein said motor-driven rotary firing interface is operable independently from said motor-driven rotary closure interface;
- and
- a control system configured to prohibit said motor-driven rotary firing interface from being operated prior to said second jaw being closed.
