A ratchet gear system (30) for converting reciprocal motion to rotational motion, comprising:
- a support frame (49), which is mechanically connected to a partially elastic torso garment (21), that expands in response to an inhalation by a user and that contracts in response to an exhalation by said user;
- wherein said frame (49) includes a slot (48) with a rod (47) passing through it, whereby said slot (48) permits the frame (49) to translate past said rod (47) when there is said inhalation or said exhalation;
- wherein said frame (49) supports an upper horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (32) and a lower horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (33);
- a ratchet gear (34) that has a plurality of teeth that are oriented to face the opposite direction of an upper plurality of pawls on an upper horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (32) and a lower plurality of pawls on a lower horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (33), wherein said gear (34) is fixed such that it rotates but does not translate, and said gear (34) is axially aligned and connected by said fixed rod (47) to a cog gear (36), wherein said rod (47) rotates with said ratchet gear (34) and said cog gear (36);
- wherein the upper horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (32) drives the ratchet gear (34) in an initial direction when the user inhales;
- and the lower horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (33) drives the ratchet gear (34) in a same direction as the initial direction when the user exhales;
- a gear train composed of said cog gear (36) that is axially aligned and connected by said fixed rod (47) to said ratchet gear (34), wherein said cog gear (36) is meshed with a drive cog gear (38);
- wherein said drive cog gear (38) is axially aligned and fused to a non-magnet side of a rotatable disk (42), whereby said ratchet gear (34), when it rotates, causes said cog gear (36) and said drive cog gear (38) to rotate, whereby said rotatable disk (42) is caused to rotates in an invariable direction;
- an upper spring (37) that has an end that is mechanically connected to said frame (49) and that has an opposite end that is mechanically connected to said upper horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (32) such that it pushes the upper horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (32) in contact with the ratchet gear (34), when the user inhales;
- a lower spring (35) that has a second end that is mechanically connected to said frame (49) and that has a second opposite end that is mechanically connected to said lower horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (33) such that it pushes the lower horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (33) in contact with the ratchet gear (34), when the user exhales;
- a pivot pin (31) on a non-spring end of the upper horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (32), wherein the upper horizontal ratchet assembly (32) is allowed to pivot;
- and
- a second pivot pin (39) on a second non-spring end of the lower horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (33), wherein the lower horizontal ratchet pawl assembly (33) is allowed to pivot.
