Abstract
An article includes a reflector having a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and a third surface; and a first selective light modulator layer external to the first surface of the reflector; wherein the third surface of the reflector is open. A method of making an article is also disclosed.

An article comprising:
- a reflector having a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and a third surface;
- and
- a first selective light modulator layer external to the first surface of the reflector, wherein the first selective light modulator layer includes alternating layers of non-absorbing materials and absorbing materials;
- wherein the third surface of the reflector is open;
- and
- wherein the article is an asymmetric layer structure.

A method for manufacturing an article comprising:
- providing a substrate;
- depositing a transparent layer;
- depositing a first selective light modulator layer on the transparent layer;
- and
- depositing a second selective light modulator layer, the second selective light modulator layer being between the substrate and the transparent layer;
- wherein the first selective light modulator layer is deposited using a liquid coating process.
