Abstract
The present disclosure provides methods of stabilizing surgical screws comprising the intraoperative mixing of reactive putties to yield a homogenous putty composition (HPC) into which the screw is inserted, wherein the HPC comprises a polyurethane or polyurethane urea copolymer, one or more particulate materials, and one or more additive materials.
Claims12
A method for stabilizing a surgical screw, the method comprising:
- intraoperatively mixing a first reactive putty and a second reactive putty to form a homogenous putty composition (HPC);
- filling a drilled or tapped hole with a portion of the HPC;
- and
- inserting the screw into the HPC before or after it hardens,
- wherein the HPC comprises 20-30 wt % of a polyurethane or polyurethane urea copolymer, 60-75 wt % of one or more particulate materials, and 4-10 wt % of one or more additive materials,
- wherein the first reactive putty comprises an isocyanate component and the second reactive putty comprises a polyol component, a polyamine component, or both a polyol component and a polyamine component,
- wherein each reactive putty independently comprises one or more particulate materials, and
- wherein the first reactive putty comprises prepolymer and free isocyanate and the second reactive polymer comprises prepolymer and free polyol, polyamine, or polyol and polyamine,
- wherein the one or more particulate materials are selected from β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), hydroxyapatite (HA), and hydroxyapatite/beta tricalcium phosphate,
- wherein the one or more additive components are selected from calcium stearate, triacetin, tocopheryl acetate, triethanolamine, and
- wherein the HPC exhibits a stiffness in the range of about 4-6 millimeters for at least about 2 minutes after its formation when subjected to a penetrometer test using a force of about 50 grams applied for about 5 seconds.
