Abstract
An orthopaedic knee prosthesis includes a femoral component which exhibits enhanced articular features, minimizes removal of healthy bone stock from the distal femur, and minimizes the impact of the prosthesis on adjacent soft tissues of the knee.
Claims19
A knee prosthesis system for a femur comprising:
- a first femoral component of a first implant size and having a first articular surface and a first bone contacting surface disposed opposite the first articular surface, the first bone contacting surface comprising:
- a first anterior flange surface;
- a first chamfer surface intersecting the first anterior flange surface;
- and
- a first distal surface intersecting the first chamfer surface at an opposing end from the first anterior flange surface;
- wherein, with the first anterior flange surface and the first distal surface extrapolated to intersect at a first intersection point, the first femoral component has a first anteroposterior sizing extent as measured from the first intersection point to a posterior-most point on the first articular surface of the first femoral component;
- a second femoral component of a second implant size that is one size larger than the first implant size of the first femoral component, the second component having a second articular surface and a second bone contacting surface disposed opposite the second articular surface, the second bone contacting surface comprising:
- a second anterior flange surface arranged coplanar with the first anterior flange surface when the second anterior flange surface and the first anterior flange surface are aligned in a sagittal profile;
- a second chamfer surface intersecting with the second anterior flange surface;
- and
- a second distal surface intersecting the second chamfer surface at an opposing end from the second anterior flange surface;
- wherein, with the second anterior flange surface and the second distal surface extrapolated to intersect at a second intersection point, the second femoral component has a second anteroposterior sizing extent as measured from the second intersection point to a posterior-most point on the second articular surface of the second femoral component;
- wherein, the second anteroposterior sizing extent differs from the first anteroposterior sizing extent by a predetermined amount, and wherein the predetermined amount is the same for any adjacent pair of implant sizes for the knee prosthesis system;
- and
- wherein, the first component and second component are both configured such that an additional resection of the femur to downsize from the second femoral component to the first femoral component comprises a cut to a posterior facet and a cut to a posterior chamfer-facet of the femur.

A knee prosthesis system for a femur comprising:
- at least three different stock sizes of femoral components, wherein each of the at least three different stock sizes of components an articular surface and a bone contacting surface disposed opposite the articular surface, the bone contacting surface comprising:
- an anterior flange surface;
- a chamfer surface intersecting the anterior flange surface;
- a distal surface intersecting the chamfer surface at an opposing end from the anterior flange surface;
- a posterior chamfer surface intersecting the distal surface;
- and
- a posterior surface intersecting the posterior chamfer surface;
- wherein, with the anterior flange surface and the distal surface extrapolated to intersect at an intersection point, each femoral component has an anteroposterior sizing extent as measured from the intersection point to a posterior-most point on the articular surface differs by a same amount for any adjacent pair of stock sizes for the at least three different stock sizes;
- wherein a position and a length of the posterior chamfer surface and the posterior surface differs for each of the at least three different stock sizes of components.
