Abstract
Provided are separators for use in an electrochemical cell comprising (a) an inorganic oxide and (b) an organic polymer, wherein the inorganic oxide comprises organic substituents. Also provided are electrochemical cells comprising such separators.
Claims12
A method for preparing a free-standing separator for an electrochemical cell comprising:
- (a) coating onto a substrate a liquid mixture comprising a hydrated aluminum oxide and an organic polymer to form a coating, wherein the organic polymer is covalently bonded to at least a portion of said hydrated aluminum oxide;
- (b) drying the coating to yield a nanoporous inorganic oxide layer;
- and
- (c) delaminating the nanoporous inorganic oxide layer from the substrate to form the free-standing separator.
