Serialized digital watermarking for variable data printing

A digital press system for producing unique instances of an image from a host image design file, each unique instance having a unique digital payload, the digital press system comprising:

• a digital front end configured to obtain a marked base image, the marked image comprising the image from the host image design file embedded with a reference digital watermark, the digital front end configured to provide a rasterized version of the marked base image and allowable adjustments, the digital front end further configured to provide a payload tile specifying embedding locations where adjustments selected from the allowable adjustments are to be made to the marked base image to encode a variable digital payload in the marked base image;
• a press in communication with the digital front end, the press comprising memory and a processor, and an imager for applying a final marked base image to a substrate;
• the processor configured to obtain the payload tile, allowable adjustments and the rasterized version of the marked base image from the digital front end, and configured to read the payload tile and make adjustments to the rasterized version of the marked base image to form the final marked base image encoded with the variable digital payload.
