Abstract
A microorganism which is genetically modified so that it produces a first essential biomass precursor by metabolizing CO2 using a recombinant carbon fixation enzyme is disclosed. The microorganism produces a second biomass precursor by metabolizing an organic carbon source and not by metabolizing CO2. The microorganism does not use the organic carbon source for producing the first essential biomass precursor.
Claims12
A bacteria which is genetically modified to express phosphoribulokinase (prk) and Ribulose-Bisphosphate Carboxylase (RuBisCo), wherein said bacteria produces a first essential biomass precursor by metabolizing CO2, wherein the bacteria produces a second biomass precursor by metabolizing an organic carbon source and not by metabolizing CO2, wherein the bacteria does not use said organic carbon source for producing said first essential biomass precursor, wherein said bacteria is further modified so as to down-regulate expression or activity of genes encoding phosphofructokinase and glucose 6-phosphate-1-dehydrogenase.
A method of generating a bacteria which produces a first essential biomass precursor by metabolizing CO2, wherein the bacteria produces a second biomass precursor by metabolizing an organic carbon source and not by metabolizing CO2, wherein the bacteria does not use said organic carbon source for producing said first essential biomass precursor, the method comprising expressing in the bacteria phosphoribulokinase (prk) and Ribulose-Bisphosphate Carboxylase (RuBisCo) and deleting in the bacteria the genes encoding phosphofructokinase and glucose 6-phosphate-1-dehydrogenase, thereby generating the bacteria.
