Method and system of differential compression

A method of differential compression of data, the method comprising:

• receiving a plurality of input data blocks for compression, wherein the plurality of input data blocks comprises a first input data block and second input data blocks;
• dividing the first input data block into a first segment and a second segment;
• computing first similarity degrees between the first segment and each of the second input data blocks;
• computer second similarity degrees between the second segment and each of the second input data blocks;
• selecting a highest first similarity degree from among the first similarity degrees;
• selecting a highest second similarity degree from among the second similarity degrees;
• selecting, as a first optimal reference data block the second input data block associated with the highest first similarity degree;
• selecting, as a second optimal reference data block, the second input data block associated with the highest second similarity degree;
• and
• applying, based on a third similarity degree between the first segment and the first optimal reference data block and based on a fourth similarity degree between the second segment and the second optimal reference data block the differential compression to the first input data block, the first optimal reference data block, and the second optimal reference data block in response to determining that the differential compression is to be applied.

A computer program product comprising computer-executable instructions that are stored on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium and that, when executed by a processor of a system for differential compression, causes the system to be configured to:

• receive a plurality of input data blocks for compression, wherein the plurality of input data blocks comprises a first input data block and second input data blocks;
• divide the first input data block into a first segment and a second segment;
• compute first similarity degrees between the first segment and each of the second input data blocks;
• compute second similarity degrees between the second segment and each of the second input data blocks;
• select a highest first similarity degree from among the first similarity degrees;
• select a highest second similarity degree from among the second similarity degrees;
• select, as a first optimal reference data block, the second input data block associated with the highest first similarity degree;
• select, as a second optimal reference data block, the second input data block associated with the highest second similarity degree;
• and
• apply, based on a third similarity degree between the first segment and the first optimal reference data block and based on a fourth similarity degree between the second segment and the second optimal reference data block, differential compression to the first input data block, the first optimal reference data block, and the second optimal reference data block in response to determining that the differential compression is to be applied.
