Abstract
Disclosed is a modified preceramic polymer having a polymer backbone consisting of silicon or a combination of silicon and carbon; and a pendant modifier bonded to the backbone wherein the modifier includes silicon, boron, aluminum, a transition metal, a refractory metal, or a combination thereof. The modified preceramic polymer can be used to form a ceramic matrix composite.
Claims2
A ceramic matrix composite comprising:
- reinforcing fibers and a matrix,
- wherein the matrix comprises silicon carbide and metal carbide and
- the metal carbide is homogeneously dispersed throughout the silicon carbide;
- and
- wherein the reinforcing fibers include metal fibers, Si3N4 fibers, SiOC fibers, Al2O3 fibers, glass fibers, E-glass fibers, S2 glass fibers, aramid fibers, polyethylene fibers, or combinations thereof.
