Abstract
A reinforced refractory container having a cast refractory container which includes a sidewall defining an interior volume, the sidewall having inner and outer surfaces, the container cast from a castable refractory composition, and a wound, continuous fiber tensile reinforcement structure integrated with the container sidewall. A method of fabricating the reinforced refractory container is also provided.
Claims11
A method of fabricating a reinforced refractory container comprising:
- (a) fiber winding one or more tows of continuous fibers under tension about a mandrel so as to form a fiber preform having a tubular section with an open weave fiber wall;
- (b) removing the preform from the mandrel;
- (c) positioning said tubular section of the fiber preform in a mold, said mold configured to cast a refractory container having a sidewall which defines an interior volume, the sidewall having inner and outer surfaces;
- and
- (d) adding a refractory castable to said mold, wherein, after said refractory castable is added to the mold, some of the refractory castable penetrates interstices between the tows;
- and
- (e) allowing the refractory castable to cure such that said fiber preform is integrated with the container sidewall;
- wherein, after curing, said fiber preform is located within the outer half of the sidewall of the refractory container;
- and
- further wherein said refractory container is in the form of an open-ended cylindrical ring having an outer diameter DRR and a sidewall thickness of TRR, and said fiber preform comprises a tubular portion having a height less than the height of said ring, and an inside diameter of DTB, wherein:
- (DRR−0.5TRR)≤DTB≤DRR.
