Policy enforcement in a 3GPP environment while ensuring congestion avoidance on user plane function northbound interfaces

A system for providing differential treatment to user traffic, the system comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• at least one computer-readable storage medium having stored therein instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:
• detect, at a user plane function, an initiation of a type of traffic being performed at the user plane function;
• provide, by the user plane function, a start event trigger of the type of traffic detected by the user plane function to a session management function;
• and
• receive, at the user plane function, a policy associated with the type of traffic, the policy including instructions preventing submissions of subsequent event triggers to the session management function until an end of the type of traffic, the subsequent event triggers being associated with the type of traffic detected by the user plane function.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising:

• instructions stored on the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
• detect, at a user plane function, an initiation of a type of traffic being performed at the user plane function;
• provide, by the user plane function, a start event trigger of the type of traffic detected by the user plane function to a session management function;
• and
• receive, at the user plane function, a policy associated with the type of traffic, the policy including instructions preventing submissions of subsequent event triggers to the session management function until an end of the type of traffic, the subsequent event triggers being associated with the type of traffic detected by the user plane function.
