## Abstract

A method and apparatus for proactively forming flowlets for a flow in a communication network. The method includes monitoring one or more conditions associated with the flow and detecting a trigger signal. Upon detection of activation of the trigger signal, the method further includes transmitting a pause message.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for proactively formula flowlets for a flow in a communication network, the method comprising:
monitoring one or more conditions associated with the flow;
detecting a trigger signal; and
upon detection of activation of the trigger signal, transmitting a cause message that is a priority base flow control (PFC) message including a priority enabled vector (PEV) field, wherein the PEV field is indicative of an active pause duration time suitable for forming flowlets for a flow in a communication network.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the trigger signal is at least in part based on congestion detection.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the trigger signal is at least in part based on a size of the flow.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method according to claim 3, wherein the size of the flow is evaluated subsequent to flowlet creation.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method according to claim 4, wherein the size of the flow is defined based on a number of packets or a number of bytes.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the PFC message includes a time vector, wherein the time vector is indicative of a pause duration.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, wherein the pause duration is greater than or equal to a flowlet timeout value.

### Claim 8

A device for proactively forming flowlets for a flow in a communication network, the device comprising:
a processor;
a non-transitory memory storing machine executable instructions, which when executed by the processor configure the device to:
monitor one or more conditions associated with the flow;
detect a trigger signal; and
upon detection of activation of the trigger signal, transmit a pause message that is a priority base flow control (PFC) message including a priority enabled vector (PEV) field, wherein the PEV field is indicative of an active pause duration time suitable for forming flowlets for a flow in a communication network.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The device according to claim 8, wherein the trigger signal is at least in part based on congestion detection.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The device according to claim 8, wherein the trigger signal is at least in part based on a size of the flow.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The device according to claim 10, wherein the size of the flow is evaluated subsequent to flowlet creation.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The device according to claim 11, wherein the size of the flow is defined based on a number of packets or a number of bytes.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The device according to claim 8, wherein the PFC message includes a time vector, wherein the time vector is indicative of a pause duration.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The device according to claim 13, wherein the pause duration is greater than or equal to a flowlet timeout value.

### Claim 15 (depends on 8)

The device according to claim 8, wherein the device is a top of the rack (TOR) switch.
