## Abstract

A battery that periodically checks an actual battery capacity or energy with charge to a preset voltage (e.g., 4.1 V). The battery then decides the battery capacity or energy. If the capacity or energy is insufficient, then an apparatus in or associated with the battery slightly increases charging voltage to a point where the capacity is sufficient (e.g. from 4.1 V to 4.11 V). The process of periodically checking and slightly increasing charging voltage is performed until charging voltage reaches specification limit (e.g., 4.2 V). The scheme described herein has benefits such as battery longevity can be extended, risk of insufficient energy reserve can be reduced, burst power can be used as long as possible, and/or even higher burst power can be used.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A battery control system, comprising:
charging circuitry to charge a battery of a computer system, wherein the computer system is to operate with power from a power company, the battery has a backup reserve to act as a backup to the power from the power company, and the battery has a burst power reserve to supplement the power from the power company to increase an operating speed of a processor of the computer system in a burst power mode of the processor;
a first circuitry to periodically check a capacity of the battery;
a comparator to compare the capacity to a threshold to determine whether the capacity provides the backup reserve and the burst power reserve together; and
a logic to increase a charging voltage of the charging circuitry if the capacity of the battery is determined to not provide the backup reserve and the burst power reserve together; wherein:
the logic is to periodically repeat the determination of whether the capacity of the battery provides the backup reserve and the burst power reserve together, and to increase the charging voltage of the charging circuitry when the capacity of the battery does not provide the backup reserve and the burst power reserve together, until the charging voltage reaches a limit; and
when the charging voltage reaches the limit, the logic is to maintain the backup reserve while reducing the burst power reserve.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The battery control system of claim 1, wherein the increase of the charging voltage of the charging circuitry ensures the capacity of the battery provides the backup reserve and the burst power reserve together.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The battery control system of claim 1, further comprising a fuel gauge coupled to the logic, wherein the fuel gauge is to determine the capacity of the battery.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The battery control system of claim 3, further comprising a temperature sensor to provide a temperature of the battery to the fuel gauge, wherein the fuel gauge is to determine the capacity of the battery based on the temperature.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The battery control system of claim 1, wherein the logic is to deploy one or more policies about managing the battery when the charging voltage reaches the limit.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The battery control system of claim 5, wherein the one or more policies identify relative amounts of the backup reserve and the burst power reserve.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The battery control system of claim 1, wherein the burst power reserve is to increase the operating speed of the processor in the burst power mode of the processor without violating a power limit of the power company.

### Claim 8

A non-transitory machine-readable media having instructions stored thereon, that when executed, cause one or more processors to:
periodically check a capacity of a battery when the battery is charged at a preset voltage;
determine whether the capacity provides a backup reserve and a burst power reserve together, wherein the backup reserve is to act as a backup power source for a computing system and the burst power reserve is to increase an operating speed of the computing system in a burst power mode of the computing system;
when the capacity of the battery does not provide the backup reserve and the burst power reserve together, increase a charging voltage for the battery to a point where the charging voltage reaches a limit; and
modify or deploy a policy for the battery when it is determined that the charging voltage reaches the limit, wherein the policy is to keep the burst power reserve and reduce the backup reserve.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 8, wherein the non-transitory machine-readable media is stored in a battery backup system or battery backup unit.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 8, wherein the non-transitory machine-readable media is stored in a processor coupled to a battery backup system or battery backup unit.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 8, wherein the non-transitory machine-readable media is controllable by an operating system.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The non-transitory machine-readable media of claim 8, wherein the backup reserve is to act as a backup to power from a power company.

periodically check a capacity of a battery of the battery system when the battery is charged at a preset voltage, wherein the battery has a backup reserve, a burst power reserve, and an unused capacity;
determine whether the capacity of the battery does not provide the backup reserve and burst power reserve together;
if the capacity of the battery does not provide the backup reserve and burst power reserve together, increase a charging voltage for the battery until the charging voltage reaches a limit; and
when the charging voltage reaches the limit, keep the backup reserve and reduce the burst power reserve.
