## Abstract

An exemplary method of making packages includes advancing a web of connected bags to a position where an opening of the bag is below an engagement device and opening the engagement device. Additionally, the exemplary method includes blowing the opening of the bag to a partially opened configuration, and reverse indexing the web of connected bags so that a portion of the engagement device is disposed inside of the bag and a portion of the engagement device is disposed outside the bag. Subsequently, the exemplary method includes closing the engagement device so that the engagement device engages the bag and moving the engagement device to a position that causes the opening of the bag to have a rectangular shape.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An apparatus for making packages, comprising:
an engagement device configured to engage an opening of a bag, the engagement device comprising:
first and second grippers configured to engage spaced-apart portions of a first section of the bag, and
third and fourth grippers configured to move relative to each other and to engage a second section of the bag; and
a sealing assembly configured to seal the opening of the bag;
wherein, after the first and second grippers engage the first section and the third and fourth grippers engage the second section, the first and second grippers are configured to move away from the third and fourth grippers to hold open the opening of the bag; and
wherein, after the opening of the bag is held open, the third and fourth grippers are configured to move away from each other to move first and second side edges of the bag away from each other to close the bag.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
a controller configured to control the engagement device based on a size of the opening.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the size of the opening is based on a size of a product.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the controller is configured to control the size of the opening at least in part by controlling a spacing between the first and second grippers.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sealing assembly includes a bar configured to be selectively moved between an unclamped position and a clamped position.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the first and second grippers are located on the bar of the sealing assembly, and wherein the bar is configured to move to cause the first and second grippers to away from the third and fourth grippers to form the opening of the bag into the opening.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth grippers are configured to hold the opening of the bag while a product is loaded into the bag.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The apparatus of claim 7, wherein, after the product is loaded into the bag, the third and fourth grippers are further configured to move away from each to close the opening of the bag.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the sealing assembly is configured to seal the opening of the bag after the third and fourth grippers are moved away from each to close the opening of the bag.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
a blower configured to blow air into the opening of the bag while the bag is on a web of connected bags;
wherein the engagement device is configured to engage the opening of the bag while the blower is blowing air into the opening.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the web of connected bags is formed from at least one of:
a first ply and a second ply that are sealed together along the first and second side edges, wherein the first section is the first ply and the second section is the second ply; or
a single ply that is folded over and sealed together along the edges opposite the fold, wherein the first section is on one side of the fold and the second section is on the other side of the fold.

### Claim 12

A method of making packages, comprising:
engaging, by an engagement device, an opening of a bag, wherein the engaging comprises:
engaging, by first and second grippers of the engagement device, spaced apart portions of a first section of the bag, and
engaging, by third and fourth grippers of the engagement device, spaced apart portions of a second section of the bag, wherein the third and fourth grippers are configured to move relative to each other;
after the first and second grippers engage the first section and the third and fourth grippers engage the second section, moving the first and second grippers away from the third and fourth grippers to hold open the opening of the bag;
closing the bag after the opening of the bag is held open, wherein closing the bag comprises moving the third and fourth grippers move away from each other to move first and second side edges of the bag away from each other; and
sealing, by a sealing assembly, the opening of the bag.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising:
controlling, by a controller, the engagement device based on a size of the opening.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the size of the opening is based on a size of a product.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the controlling the engagement device comprises controlling, by the controller, a spacing between the first and second grippers based on the size of the opening.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the sealing assembly includes a bar configured to be selectively moved between an unclamped position and a clamped position.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The method of claim 16, wherein the first and second grippers are located on the bar of the sealing assembly, and wherein moving the first and second grippers away from the third and fourth grippers comprises moving the bar away from the third and fourth grippers to hold open the opening of the bag.

### Claim 18 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising:
holding open, by the first, second, third, and fourth grippers, the opening of the bag while a product is loaded into the bag.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The method of claim 18, further comprising:
after the product is loaded into the bag, moving the third and fourth grippers away from each to close the opening of the bag.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The method of claim 19, wherein the sealing assembly is configured to seal the opening of the bag after the third and fourth grippers are moved away from each to close the opening of the bag.

### Claim 21 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising:
blowing air, by a blower, into the opening of the bag while the bag is on a web of connected bags;
