## Abstract

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided an adaptor or attachment which is suitable for integration into the patient circuit of a ventilation system, such as a non-invasive open ventilation system, is configured for attachment to any standard ventilation mask, and is outfitted with a jet pump which creates pressure and flow by facilitating the entrainment of ambient air. The adaptor comprises a base element and a nozzle element which are operatively coupled to each other. The base element further defines a throat and at least one entrainment port facilitating a path of fluid communication between the throat and ambient air. The nozzle element includes a jet nozzle, and a connector which is adapted to facilitate the fluid coupling of the nozzle element to a bi-lumen tube of the patient circuit. The connector includes both a delivery port and a sensing port. The jet nozzle and the delivery port collectively define a delivery line or lumen which fluidly communicates with the throat of the base element, and is placeable into fluid communication with the delivery lumen of the bi-lumen tube.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An adaptor comprising:
a base element defining a gas delivery conduit, the base element having a recess formed therein and an opening that extends between the gas delivery conduit and the recess along an axis, the base element further defining an elongate pressure sensing line that extends in spaced relation to the axis and terminates at the recess; and
a connector defining a gas delivery lumen which fluidly communicates with the gas delivery conduit of the base element and a pressure sensing lumen that is maintained in a constant state of fluid communication with an annular channel defined between the connector and the recess irrespective of an orientation of the connector relative to the base element such that relative rotation of the connector and the base element does not compromise integrity of a pressure sensing conduit defined at least in part by the elongate pressure sensing line, the annular channel, and the pressure sensing lumen.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The adaptor of claim 1, wherein the connector is adapted to facilitate fluid coupling of the adaptor to a tube of a patient circuit.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The adaptor of claim 2, wherein the connector is adapted to place the gas delivery lumen of the connector in fluid communication with a gas delivery lumen of the tube.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The adaptor of claim 3, wherein the connector is adapted to place the pressure sensing lumen of the connector in fluid communication with a pressure sensing lumen of the tube, the pressure sensing lumen of the tube being fluidly isolated from the gas delivery lumen of the tube.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The adaptor of claim 1, wherein the connector includes a circularly configured mandrel portion that is advanced into the recess of the base element, the annular channel being defined between the mandrel portion and the recess.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The adaptor of claim 5, wherein advancement of the mandrel portion into the recess is limited by abutment of a shoulder defined by the connector against an end surface defined by the base element.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The adaptor of claim 6, wherein the annular channel is defined between the mandrel portion and the recess both with and without the abutment of the shoulder against the end surface.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The adaptor of claim 1, wherein the recess is circularly configured.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The adaptor of claim 8, wherein the connector includes a circularly configured mandrel portion that is advanced into the recess of the base element, the annular channel being defined between the mandrel portion and the recess.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The adaptor of claim 9, wherein the mandrel portion and the recess are complementarily configured to facilitate rotation of the connector relative to the base element.

### Claim 11

A system comprising:
a tube defining a gas delivery lumen and a pressure sensing lumen fluidly isolated from the gas delivery lumen; and
an adaptor, the adaptor including:
a base element defining a gas delivery conduit, the base element having a recess formed therein and an opening that extends between the gas delivery conduit and the recess along an axis, the base element further defining an elongate pressure sensing line that extends in spaced relation to the axis and terminates at the recess; and
a connector adapted to facilitate fluid coupling of the adaptor to the tube, the connector defining a gas delivery lumen which fluidly communicates with the gas delivery conduit of the base element and a pressure sensing lumen that is maintained in a constant state of fluid communication with an annular channel defined between the connector and the recess irrespective of an orientation of the connector relative to the base element such that relative rotation of the connector and the base element does not compromise integrity of a pressure sensing conduit defined at least in part by the elongate pressure sensing line, the annular channel, and the pressure sensing lumen of the connector.
