## Abstract

The invention provides novel compositions comprising at least two or more semifluorinated alkanes. The compositions can be used as medicines that are topically administered to an eye or ophthalmic tissue, such as for use in the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye) and/or meibomian gland dysfunction and symptoms associated therewith. The invention further provides kits comprising such compositions.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for the treatment of a disease or disorder selected from keratoconjunctivitis sicca, Sjogren syndrome, lacrimal gland insufficiency, meibomian gland disease, and/or meibomian gland dysfunction, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a composition comprising:
one semifluorinated alkane or two or more different semifluorinated alkanes, wherein said composition is free of a therapeutically effective amount of any pharmaceutically active drug substance useful for ophthalmic treatment
wherein the composition is topically administered to an eye or ophthalmic tissue.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the disease or disorder is keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye).

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the disease or disorder is meibomian gland dysfunction.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method according to claim 3, wherein the method is effective in solubilizing meibum lipids and removing abnormal and obstructive meibum from clogged meibomian gland ducts.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method according to claim 4, wherein the meibomian gland ducts are clogged with viscous meibum secretions comprising polar and non-polar lipids, cholesterol, wax esters, acyl glycerides, free fatty acids, and/or phospholipids.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition mixes with and supplements the existing tear film lipid layer and/or forms a film over the corneal surface.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition is administered to the cornea, the conjunctiva, the upper eye lid, the lower eye lid, the eye lid margin, the meibomian gland ducts, and/or the eye lashes.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein each semifluorinated alkane has a refractive index between 1.29 and 1.35 at 20° C.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein one semifluorinated alkane comprised in the composition is F6H8.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition comprises:
a semifluorinated alkane of the formula F(CF2)n(CH2)mH, wherein n is an integer from the range of 3 to 8 and m is an integer from the range of 3 to 10, and/or
a semifluorinated alkane of the formula F(CF2)n(CH2)mH, wherein n is an integer from the range of 6 to 20 and m is an integer from the range of 10 to 20.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of the first semifluorinated alkane to the second semifluorinated alkane is at least about 3:1.

### Claim 12

A method for the treatment of a disease or disorder selected from keratoconjunctivitis sicca, Sjogren syndrome, lacrimal gland insufficiency, meibomian gland disease, and/or meibomian gland dysfunction, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a composition comprising at least a first semifluorinated alkane of the formula F(CF2)n(CH2)mH, wherein n is an integer from the range of 3 to 8 and m is an integer from the range of 3 to 10, and
a second semifluorinated alkane which is different than the first, wherein said composition is free of a therapeutically effective amount of any pharmaceutically active drug substance useful for ophthalmic treatment,
wherein the composition is topically administered to an eye or ophthalmic tissue.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method according to claim 12, wherein the weight ratio of the first semifluorinated alkane to the second semifluorinated alkane is at least about 3:1.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The method according to claim 12, wherein one semifluorinated alkane comprised in the composition is F6H8.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

The method according to claim 12, wherein the second semifluorinated alkane has the formula F(CF2)n(CH2)mH, wherein n is an integer from the range of 6 to 20 and m is an integer from the range of 10 to 20.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The method according to claim 12, wherein the disease or disorder is keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye).

### Claim 17

A method for the treatment of a disease or disorder selected from keratoconjunctivitis sicca, Sjogren syndrome, lacrimal gland insufficiency, meibomian gland disease, and/or meibomian gland dysfunction, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a composition comprising at least two different semifluorinated alkanes, wherein the first semifluorinated alkane is selected from the group consisting of F(CF2)4(CH2)5H, F(CF2)4(CH2)6H, F(CF2)6(CH2)4H, F(CF2)6(CH2)6H, F(CF2)6(CH2)8H, and F(CF2)6(CH2)10H, and/or the second semifluorinated alkane is selected from the group consisting of F(CF2)8(CH2)10H and F(CF2)10(CH2)12H, wherein said composition is free of a therapeutically effective amount of any pharmaceutically active drug substance useful for ophthalmic treatment,
