Abstract
A device and methods for intervertebral spinal fusion of adjacent intervertebral bodies. An intervertebral spacer is positioned within a narrow disc space between adjacent intervertebral bodies of a patient. The spacer is arranged with upper and lower guides. The guides are adapted to simultaneously guide the deployment of upper and lower anchors of an anchoring device into their respective intervertebral bodies. The spacer is also adapted to lock the upper and lower anchors to the spacer in the deployed position.
Claims17
A method for stabilizing adjacent vertebral bodies comprising the steps of:
- providing an implantable system comprising:
- a spacer having a superior surface, an inferior surface, a first side, a second side, a distal portion and a proximal portion, the first and second sides defining a slot therebetween in the proximal portion, the spacer further having a through hole that extends through the superior surface to the inferior surface, the first and second sides respectively having first and second superior recessed tracks laterally facing each other, and respectively having third and fourth inferior recessed tracks laterally facing each other;
- a first anchor having corresponding first and second tracks adapted to ride on the first and second superior recessed tracks as a guide for deployment of the first anchor into a vertebral body;
- a second anchor having corresponding first and second tracks adapted to ride on the third and fourth inferior recessed tracks as a guide for deployment of the second anchor into a vertebral body;
- and
- a carrier carrying the first and second anchors, and positioned within the slot, wherein when the carrier translates in the slot, the carrier locks with the spacer while simultaneously deploying the first and second anchors into the vertebral bodies;
- positioning the implantable system between adjacent vertebral bodies.
A method for stabilizing adjacent vertebral bodies comprising the steps of:
- providing a spacer having a superior surface, an inferior surface, a first side, a second side, a distal portion and a proximal portion, the first and second sides defining a slot therebetween in the proximal portion, the first and second sides respectively having first and second tongues each defined by a cut-out, each tongue having an integral end and a free end, wherein the spacer includes a through hole that extends through the superior surface to the inferior surface, the first and second sides respectively having first and second superior recessed tracks laterally facing each other, and respectively having third and fourth inferior recessed tracks laterally facing each other;
- a first anchor having corresponding first and second tracks adapted to ride on the first and second superior recessed tracks as a guide;
- a second anchor having corresponding first and second tracks adapted to ride on the third and fourth inferior recessed tracks as a guide;
- and
- a carrier positioned within the slot and between the first and second anchors, wherein the free ends of the first and second tongues are moveable to engage the carrier and lock the first and second anchors in a deployed position;
- and
- positioning the spacer between adjacent vertebral bodies.
