Abstract
A ultrasonic transducer assembly of an ultrasonic surgical instrument includes a horn, a piezoelectric stack positioned proximally of the horn and defining a longitudinal opening extending therethrough, a proximal end mass positioned proximally of the piezoelectric stack and defining a longitudinal opening, and a rod secured to the horn and extending proximally from the horn through the longitudinal opening of the piezoelectric stack and the longitudinal opening of the proximal end mass. The rod is secured to the proximal end mass to pre-compress the piezoelectric stack between the horn and the proximal end mass.
Claims14
An ultrasonic transducer assembly of an ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising:
- a horn;
- a piezoelectric stack positioned proximally of the horn and defining a longitudinal opening extending therethrough;
- a proximal end mass positioned proximally of the piezoelectric stack and defining a longitudinal opening extending therethrough, the proximal end mass further defining a transverse lumen in communication with the longitudinal opening of the proximal end mass;
- and
- a rod secured to the horn and extending proximally from the horn through the longitudinal opening of the piezoelectric stack and the longitudinal opening of the proximal end mass such that a portion of the rod is exposed through the transverse lumen,
- wherein the exposed portion of the rod is fused to the proximal end mass within the transverse lumen to maintain a pre-compression of the piezoelectric stack between the horn and the proximal end mass.
An ultrasonic transducer assembly of an ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising:
- a horn;
- a piezoelectric stack positioned proximally of the horn and defining a longitudinal opening extending therethrough;
- a proximal end mass positioned proximally of the piezoelectric stack and defining a longitudinal opening extending therethrough, the proximal end mass further defining a transverse lumen in communication with the longitudinal opening of the proximal end mass;
- a rod secured to the horn and extending proximally from the horn through the longitudinal opening of the piezoelectric stack and the longitudinal opening of the proximal end mass, the rod defining a transverse lumen through a proximal portion thereof;
- and
- a wedge extending at least partially through the transverse lumen of the proximal end mass and the transverse lumen of the rod to maintain a pre-compression of the piezoelectric stack between the horn and the proximal end mass.
An ultrasonic transducer assembly of an ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising:
- a horn;
- a piezoelectric stack positioned proximally of the horn and defining a longitudinal opening extending therethrough;
- a proximal end mass positioned proximally of the piezoelectric stack and defining a tapered longitudinal opening extending therethrough;
- a rod secured to the horn and extending proximally from the horn through the longitudinal opening of the piezoelectric stack and the tapered longitudinal opening of the proximal end mass, the rod including a distal body and an expandable proximal wedge, the expandable proximal wedge at least partially received within the tapered longitudinal opening of the proximal end mass,
- wherein the expandable proximal wedge is configured to expand outwardly to thereby urge the proximal end mass distally to pre-compress the piezoelectric stack between the horn and the proximal end mass.
