## CPC

- H04S 7/303: {Tracking of listener position or orientation}
- H04S 2400/11: Positioning of individual sound objects, e.g. moving airplane, within a sound field (H04S2420/13 takes precedence)
- H04S 2420/01: Enhancing the perception of the sound image or of the spatial distribution using head related transfer functions [HRTF's] or equivalents thereof, e.g. interaural time difference [ITD] or interaural level difference [ILD]
- H04S: STEREOPHONIC SYSTEMS

## Abstract

A method improves performance of a computer that provides binaural sound to a listener. A memory stores coordinate locations that follow a path of how the head of the listener moves. This path is retrieved in anticipation of subsequent head movements of the listener to improve computer performance of executing binaural sound.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method comprising:
processing sound to generate binaural sound that localizes to a virtual image displayed to a listener with a wearable electronic device (WED) worn on a head of the listener;
tracking movements of the head of the listener; and
improving performance of the processing by prefetching and caching head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) for the movements of the head of the listener.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising:
predicting a sequence of HRTFs having coordinates based on a path of the movements of the head of the listener.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising:
predicting a head orientation of the listener; and
improving the performance of the processing by prefetching and caching the HRTFs that have coordinates derived from the head orientation.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising:
predicting head movements of the listener, wherein the HRTFs being prefetched and cached correspond to the head movements of the listener being predicted.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the HRTFs have coordinates that correspond to locations of the virtual image such that the binaural sound continues to localize to the virtual image as the head of the listener moves.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising:
determining a path that represents a head orientation that the listener will have when the virtual image moves; and
transforming coordinates of the path into coordinates for the HRTFs.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising:
improving the performance of the processing by storing the HRTFs in a sequence that follows coordinates along a path based on at least one of the movements of the head of the listener and movements of the virtual image.

### Claim 8

An electronic device, comprising:
a cache memory; and
one or more processors that processes sound into binaural sound that localizes to a virtual sound source for a listener with a head orientation, wherein performance of the processor improves by prefetching and caching head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) into the cache memory with the HRTFs having coordinates for where the virtual sound source will move.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The electronic device of claim 8, wherein the HRTFs include a sequence of coordinates defined by a path along which the virtual sound source will move.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The electronic device of claim 8, wherein the performance of the one or more processors improves by prefetching and caching the HRTFs that have azimuth and elevation coordinates for locations where the virtual sound source will be.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The electronic device of claim 8, wherein the performance of the one or more processors improves by prefetching and caching the HRTFs with coordinate locations corresponding to a path of movement that the virtual sound source will take, and the virtual sound source is an augmented reality (AR) image or a virtual reality (VR) image.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The electronic device of claim 8, wherein the electronic device includes a wearable electronic device (WED) worn on a head of the listener, and the WED displays a virtual image at the virtual sound source.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The electronic device of claim 8, wherein the cache memory stores the HRTFs in a sequence of coordinate locations corresponding to a path of movement of the virtual sound source.

### Claim 14

A method comprising:
displaying a virtual image to a listener that localizes binaural sound to the virtual image; and
improving performance of processing the binaural sound by prefetching and caching head related transfer functions (HRTFs) corresponding to a path the virtual image will move.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein coordinates of the HRTFs correspond to azimuth and elevation coordinates of the path the virtual image will move.

### Claim 16 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 further comprising:
storing the HRTFs in a sequence having coordinates derived from the path the virtual image will move.

### Claim 17 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 further comprising:
predicting a change in azimuth and elevation coordinates of a head of the listener with respect to the path the virtual image will move.

### Claim 18 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the HRTFs have coordinates located along the path the virtual image will move.

### Claim 19 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 further comprising:
improving performance of processing the binaural sound by prefetching and caching HRTFs corresponding to a path a head of the listener will move.

### Claim 20 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 further comprising:
storing the HRTFs in cache memory of a wearable electronic device (WED) worn on a head of the listener, wherein the WED is a head mounted display or electronic glasses.
