## Abstract

Preemptive caching within content/name/information centric networking environment is contemplated. The preemptively caching may be performed within content/name/information centric networking environments of the type having a branching structure or other architecture sufficient to facilitate routing data, content, etc. such that one or more nodes other than a node soliciting a content object also receive the content object.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for preemptive caching in a content-centric network (CCN), the method comprising:
receiving, at a first node of the CCN, a first content object as an unsolicited message without the first node of the CCN transmitting an interest message identifying the first content object to another node of the CCN;
assessing cacheability of the first content object at least partially based on one or more parameters of the first content object; and
preemptively caching the first content object at the first node of the CCN in response to a cacheability assessment of the first content object meeting one or more criteria.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving the first content object at the first node of the CNN in response to an interest message transmitted in the CCN independently of the first node.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the interest message transmitted in the CCN independently of the first node is a message generated by a client of a second node of the CCN.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein preemptively caching the first content object at the first node of the CCN in response to the cacheability assessment of the first content object meeting the one or more criteria comprises preemptively caching the first content object prior to receiving, at the first node of the CCN, era first interest message identifying the first content object.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the first interest message is a message generated by a client of the first node of the CCN.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more criteria comprise a stream identifier (ID) matching with a stream ID of a content stream active at the first node of the CCN when the first content object is received.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the one or more criteria further comprise a timecode indicating the first content object corresponds with part of the content stream that has not yet been transmitted to the first node of the CCN.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more criteria comprise a field included with the first content object indicating the first content object to have a popularity score greater than a second content object stored at the first node of the CCN.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the second content object is for a content stream that is inactive at the first node of the CCN.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more criteria comprise content included in the first content object being identified in a manifest utilized at a client of the first node of the CCN.

### Claim 11

A method for preemptive caching in a content-centric network (CCN), the method comprising:
receiving, at a second node of the CCN, an unsolicited content object being communicated to a first client connected to a first node of the CCN without the second node of the CCN transmitting an interest message identifying the first content object to another node of the CCN;
determining a timecode included within the content object, the timecode indicating positioning of the content object relative to a time-coded sequence;
performing, at the second node, a cacheability assessment of the content object; and
preemptively caching the content object at the second node in response to the timecode occurring after a point in time of interest to a second client connected to the second node of the CCN.
