## Abstract

This disclosure describes an improved heat transfer system for use in reaction vessels used in chemical and biological processes. In one embodiment, a heat transfer baffle comprising two sub-assemblies adjoined to one another is provided.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for producing a heat transfer baffle, the method comprising adjoining:
a. a first sub-assembly consisting essentially of a first material adjoined to a second material to provide a distribution channel;
b. a second sub-assembly consisting essentially of a first material adjoined to a second material to provide a distribution channel; and
c. a third material that adjoins the first assembly and the second sub-assembly to one another;
wherein a heat transfer baffle comprises at least one relief channel formed between the first sub-assembly and the second sub-assembly, and heat transfer media may be circulated through at least one distribution channel without also circulating through at least one relief channel.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 comprising two or more distinct compartments through which heat transfer media may be circulated independently of any other compartment.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising adjoining the heat transfer baffle to a reactor vessel.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3 wherein the one or more heat transfer baffles are adjoined to the reactor vessel through a substantially seamless joint boundary between the baffle and the vessel.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3 wherein each baffle is adjoined to at least one heat transfer media inlet header and at least one heat transfer media outlet header, and the relief channel of each baffle is vented to the vessel exterior.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3 wherein more than one heat transfer baffles is adjoined to the reactor vessel.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein each heat transfer baffle is fixably attached to the interior surface of the reaction vessel such that when the vessel contains contents in motion resulting in stress upon the baffles, the stress is attenuated.

### Claim 8 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3 wherein the heat transfer baffles is fixably attached to the interior surface of the reaction vessel at an angle relative to the interior wall or radius of the vessel, the angle being selected from the group consisting of about 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, 35°, 40°, 45°, 50°, 55°, 60°, 65°, 70°, 75°, 80°, 85°, and 90°.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8 wherein the angle is about 60° relative to the interior wall or about 30° relative to the radius.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the distribution channels are adjoined to a heat transfer media inlet header.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the distribution channels are adjoined to a heat transfer media outlet header.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the one distribution channel is adjoined to a heat transfer media inlet header and a heat transfer media outlet header.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the heat transfer medium is selected from the group consisting of steam, a pumpable fluid, water, glycol, a heat transfer oil, a refrigerant, and combinations thereof.
