## Abstract

A detachable motor-powered surgical instrument. The instrument may include a housing that includes at least one engagement member for removably attaching the housing to an actuator arrangement. A motor is supported within the housing for supplying actuation motions to various portions of a surgical end effector coupled to the housing. The housing may include a contact arrangement that is configured to permit power to be supplied to the motor only when the housing is operably attached to the actuator arrangement.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A surgical stapling system, comprising:
a proximal portion;
a distal portion removably coupleable to said proximal portion at a coupling interface;
a motor;
a control circuit in electrical communication with said motor, wherein said control circuit comprises a first plurality of contacts and a second plurality of contacts; and
a third plurality of contacts movable relative to said control circuit between:
a first position in which said third plurality of contacts are in electrical communication with said first plurality of contacts; and
a second position in which said third plurality of contacts are in electrical communication with said second plurality of contacts;
wherein said third plurality of contacts are movable into electrical communication with said control circuit based on said distal portion being coupled to said proximal portion.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The surgical stapling system of claim 1, further comprising an end effector extending from said distal portion, wherein said end effector comprises:
a first jaw; and
a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The surgical stapling system of claim 2, further comprising:
a threaded drive screw operably coupled to said motor; and
a firing member operably coupled to said threaded drive screw, wherein said firing member is movable between a proximal position and a distal position, and wherein rotation of said threaded drive screw is configured to move said firing member toward said distal position.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The surgical stapling system of claim 3, wherein said firing member is configured to position said second jaw relative to said first jaw based on said firing member moving toward said distal position.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The surgical stapling system of claim 4, wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The surgical stapling system of claim 5, wherein said firing member is configured to deploy said staples from said staple cartridge based on said firing member moving toward said distal position.
