## Abstract

A downhole coupling mechanism for use in downhole tools that find application in wells exploited by a hydraulic refracturing process. The downhole coupling mechanism connects first and second tubular sections via a tensile load arrangement of wires located in complimentary grooves, a torque arrangement of interlocking lugs and notches on opposite ends, and a seal arrangement. The downhole coupling mechanism provides a thin walled coupling where a screw-threaded connection could not achieve the required tensile load, torque and sealing properties needed. Embodiments of a thin walled anchor and packer including the downhole coupling mechanism are described.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A downhole coupling mechanism comprising;
a plurality of complimentary grooves within opposing surfaces that align when a first portion of a first tubular section and a second portion of a second tubular section are arranged co-axially one inside the other;
a plurality of wires, each wire being located within one of the plurality grooves on the first portion and a complimentary one of the plurality of grooves on the second portion, so that each pair of complimentary grooves includes one wire extending around a circumference of a surface of the first portion or the second portion; and
an access window extending across the plurality of grooves, a length of the access window being larger than a width of access window, the length of the access window extending in an axis parallel to a central axis of the first tubular section.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 1, wherein a wall thickness of the downhole coupling mechanism when the first portion and the second portion are arranged co-axially one inside the other is less than or equal to 10% of an overall outer diameter of the downhole coupling mechanism.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 2, wherein the wall thickness of the downhole coupling mechanism when the first and second ends are arranged co-axially one inside the other is less than or equal to 12% of a minimum inner diameter of the downhole coupling mechanism.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 1, further comprising:
one or more seals arranged between the opposing surfaces when the first portion and the second portion are arranged co-axially one inside the other, wherein the one or more seals are each arranged in a seating groove, wherein the seating groove is continuous around an outer surface.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 1, comprising:
at least one lug and at least one notch, wherein the at least one lug and at least one notch is provided opposite of the first portion and the second portion and arranged equidistant around the opposing surfaces.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 5, wherein a length of the at least one lug co-axial with a central axis of the first tubular second and the second tubular section is greater than a wall thickness of the downhole coupling mechanism.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 1, comprising a plurality of complimentary grooves machined in opposing surfaces, wherein each complimentary pair of grooves includes the at least one wire.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 7, wherein the one or more complimentary grooves are circumferential grooves.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 1, wherein the downhole coupling mechanism is provided at a lower end of the downhole tool and is operable to connect the downhole tool to a tubular string located deeper in a well.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 1, comprising:
a torque arrangement configured to allow the first portion and the second portion to rotate together when the first portion and the second portion are arranged co-axially one inside the other.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The downhole coupling mechanism according to claim 1,
wherein the downhole coupling mechanism is a spline formed of the first portion and the second portion, wherein a first element of the spline on the first portion corresponds to a second element of the spline on the second portion.

### Claim 12

A method for a downhole tool comprising:
aligning a plurality of complimentary grooves machined in opposing surfaces when a first portion of a first tubular section and a second portion of a second tubular section are co-axially aligned;
positioning a wire within one of the plurality of grooves on the first portion and a complimentary one of the plurality of grooves on the second portion;
and exposing the plurality of complimentary via an access window extending across the plurality of complimentary, a length of the access window is larger than a width of the access window, the length of the access window extending in an axis parallel to a central axis of the first tubular section.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method for the downhole tool of claim 12,
wherein the downhole coupling mechanism is used in anchors, liner hangers, or packers.

### Claim 14

A downhole tool comprising:
a plurality of pairs of complimentary grooves machined in opposing surfaces of a first tubular section and a second tubular section, the pair of complimentary grooves being configured to be aligned with each other;
positioning a wire within each of the plurality of pairs of complimentary grooves, each of the wires being configured to temporarily couple the first tubular section and the second tubular section together;
an access window extending across the plurality of pairs of complimentary grooves, a length of the access window being larger than a width of access window, the length of the access window extending in an axis parallel to a central axis of the first tubular section.

### Claim 15

A method for a downhole tool comprising:
connecting a first tubular section with a second tubular section via a tensile load arrangement of at least one wire located in a plurality complimentary grooves, the plurality complementary grooves being within opposing surfaces of the first tubular section and the second tubular section when a first portion of the first tubular section and a second portion of the second tubular section are arranged co-axially inside the other, wherein the at least one wire extends around a circumference of a surface of the first portion or the second portion;
